Some 77 homes in the rural Wiltshire UK hamlet of Axford look set to gain access to Openreach’s (BT) “fibre broadband” network (FTTC/P) after Stefan Persson, founder of H&M and owner of the 10,000 acre Ramsbury Estate, got his staff to help dig and lay the new fibre optic cable (saving £90,000).

Internet provider uno (uno Comms Ltd) has reduced the monthly price of their ‘up to’ 76Mbps FTTC “Fibre Pro” unmetered broadband packages and removed the activation or migration fees for any orders made before the end of January 2018.

Internet and mobile provider EE appears to have discounted the monthly prices of their top Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based unlimited 38Mbps and 76Mbps capable “fibre broadband” packages for the Christmas and New Year period, which shaves a few extra pounds off the rental.

New subscribers to Vodafone’s unlimited ‘up to’ 38Mbps and ‘up to’ 76Mbps capable FTTC based home “fibre broadband” packages can now get the service for even less after the operator reduced their monthly prices for the full 18 month contract term, which makes them one of the cheapest ISPs.

The £171 million Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England has announced that their existing contracts with wireless ISP Airband and “full fibre” (FTTP) provider Gigaclear are set to be extended, which could result in an extra 9,000 rural homes and businesses being reached.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today decided to introduce a round of Christmas discounts on their standard (up to 17Mbps) and faster fibre / FTTC (up to 38Mbps) broadband packages, which will be available to order by new customers until early in 2018.

After a final consultation (here) the Government has today revealed its chosen path for implementing a new legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which promises a minimum broadband download speed of 10Mbps (1Mbps upload) for all by 2020 and rejects BT’s £600m voluntary proposal.

As expected the Scottish Government has published the OJEU procurement document for their £600 million R100 programme, which aspires to extend superfast broadband (30Mbps+) networks to cover 100% of premises in Scotland (UK) by the end of 2021 (or March 2022 as a financial year).

Market regulator Ofcom has today published its International Communications Market Report 2017, which compares broadband and other telecoms services in the United Kingdom against 16 other countries. The UK fairs well for 30Mbps+ broadband coverage but our “full fibre” (FTTP/H) needs work.

The Connected Nations 2017 report has today been published by Ofcom, which reveals a huge rise in the availability of fixed line 300Mbps+ “ultrafast broadband” services to 36% of the UK (up from 2% last year). Elsewhere 4% (1.1 million premises) still cannot receive speeds of 10Mbps+ (down from 6%).

The Scottish Government has today confirmed that it plans to spend £600 million on gap funding for their R100 programme, which aims to make a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) capable network available to 100% of Scotland by the end of 2021 (March 2022 when viewing as a financial year).

The state aid supported Better Broadband for Oxfordshire partnership with Openreach (BT) has today claimed to have successfully completed their Phase 2 contract by helping to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) connectivity to cover 95%+ of the county by the end of 2017 as planned.

Openreach has paused a trial of Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP) technology for their troublesome ECI based FTTC “fibre broadband” street cabinets. The technology works fine on their Huawei estate but ECI has long been the naughty child, although their trial is expected to continue next year.

The Community Fibre Partnerships scheme that Openreach (BT) runs, which offers grants up to £30,000 to help co-fund the cost of upgrading an area to receive their FTTC or FTTP based “fibre broadband” network, expects to have benefited 60,000 UK premises within 12 months (currently 30,000).

The Superfast Staffordshire project with Openreach (BT) claims to have succeeded in its original Phase 2 contract goal, which aimed to make fixed line FTTC/P superfast broadband (24Mbps+) networks available to order by 95% of premises before the end of 2017 (c.97% in terms of the raw “fibre” footprint).

Openreach has started an unexpected third UK ISP trial of their long in the making Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) product, which will allow consumers to buy a standalone “fibre broadband” (FTTC VDSL2 or G.fast) line without the voice (phone) service.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has opened a new consultation on a change to help foster the roll-out of “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband networks by preventing BT from reducing its wholesale charges for slower hybrid fibre (FTTC) connections in areas where rivals are building new networks.
