In a surprise announcement WarwickNet, which has made its name by building alternative fibre optic based broadband networks (FTTC, FTTP and Leased Lines etc.) to UK business parks, industrial estates and multi-tenancy buildings, has been gobbled up by Somerset-based ISP CableCom.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project has revealed that their Phase 1 roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services with BT (Openreach) will miss its target by far more than the “circa 1,700 premises” that was claimed in December 2016; it has actually fallen short by c.11,000.

The iNorthumberland project in England, which last June 2016 hit the 90% coverage target for “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) or 95% if you include the sub-24Mbps “fibre” footprint (here), has now begun to expand under the £4.1m Phase 2 extension deal that will reach 3,700 extra premises.

One of the problems with BT’s new 330Mbps capable hybrid-fibre G.fast technology (ITU G.9700/9701) is that it can’t harness all of its spectrum (106MHz) because it needs to avoid interfering with the existing VDSL2 (FTTC) based “fibre broadband” service. But if they could co-exist.. speed boost.

Openreach (BT) will on Monday officially start the deployment phase for their new pilot of ‘up to’ 330Mbps capable G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) broadband technology, which by the end of March 2017 should have been rolled out to 138,000 homes and businesses in 17 places across the United Kingdom.

The £7.6m follow-on Superfast Cornwall contract, which is working with Openreach (BT) to expand the local availability of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to at least another 8,600 premises by “early 2018“, has finally begun its roll-out. So far 1,450 premises in 25 communities have been reached.

The Government’s £1.7bn state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK programme has released its latest Q3 2016 take-up data for the roll-out of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which shows strong adoption and that will help reinvestment.

A second £2.8 million extension of the existing Wiltshire Online project has been announced that will see Openreach (BT) roll-out their faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to an additional 5,000 homes and businesses in the county. But the 24Mbps+ coverage target remains unclear.

The Government’s £1.7bn Broadband Delivery UK project, which has been deploying “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 95% of UK premises by 2017/18 and then 97% by 2020, has confirmed that £442m is being returned by BT (Openreach) for reinvestment to help cover another 600,000 premises.

Residents of the Farndon Fields Development in Market Harborough (Leicestershire), many of whom have been forced to suffer slow ADSL2+ broadband speeds despite owning new build homes, look set to gain access to 80Mbps capable FTTC “fibre broadband” thanks to a new co-funded deal with BT.

Low cost ISP Plusnet has today reduced the monthly price of their unlimited ‘up to’ 17Mbps ADSL2+ and ‘up to’ 38-76Mbps FTTC based “Fibre Broadband” packages (these all include line rental) by several £ for new customers, which will be available to order until 17th January 2017.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project has today signed a major new £62.25m deal with rural ISP Gigaclear, which will enable the provider to roll-out their 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network to 35,225 of the hardest to reach premises in the region by 2019.

Sky Broadband will today become the first ISP in the United Kingdom to start advertising their headline packages using average download speeds. On top of that they’ve tweaked some of their broadband prices / contract lengths and launched a new dedicated “Tech Team” to boost customer support.

TalkTalk has today decided to complement their 18 month contract terms by adding a lengthy 24 month option (i.e. 12 and 18 month terms are also available) and they’ve tweaked some of their broadband bundle discounts to match, although the new offers won’t last forever.
