Telecoms watchers may be interested to learn that BTOpenreach has introduced extra capacity for their VDSL based Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband services by giving engineers the ability to upgrade their large Huawei street cabinets (H200) and increase customer capacity to 384.

The Northern Lincs Broadband project in England today announced that the rural village of Appleby has become one of the first to benefit from their new Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract with BT, which will expand “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to an additional 3,400 premises.

The Hull and East Yorkshire (England) focused telecoms operator KCOM has kindly confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that around 8% (12,000 premises) of their planned fibre optic based broadband roll-out to 150,000 local premises will be catered for via the slower Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service.

Sky UK (Sky Broadband) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they are about to start trials of a new 18Mbps unlimited usage Sky Fibre Lite (FTTC) product with around 20,000 customers, which is designed to tempt those on their slower ADSL2+ based service to upgrade to FTTC for a better speed.

Anybody interested in Andrews and Arnold’s (AAISP) Home::1 TeraByte broadband package, which combines either an ADSL2+ or ‘up to’ 80Mbps FTTC (VDSL) service with a 1 TeraByte (1000 GigaBytes) usage allowance, may like to know that it can now be taken without bundled line rental from the same ISP.

KCOM, the incumbent telecoms operator for Hull and East Yorkshire in England, has revealed that their on-going “Lightstream” roll-out of fibre optic broadband (FTTP/C) services has now covered 78,000 premises with 26,000 connected including 1,700 businesses (33.33% take-up).

Telecoms provider TalkTalk has reduced the price of their ‘up to’ 38Mbps capable “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) service to just £5 per month for 12 months (£17.50 for 6 months after that and then £19.50 thereafter), but don’t forget to add the line rental charge of £17.70 per month on top (equivalent of £15.93 a month when pre-paid for 1 year).

The Isle of Wight Council, which represents an island just off England’s central south coast (home to around 140,000 people), confirms that its joint £5.1m contract with BT has successfully expanded the reach of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 99% of local homes and businesses.
