The Court of Appeal for the British overseas territory of Gibraltar has ruled in favour of privately owned FTTP broadband operator, GibFibre (ISP GibFibreSpeed), after it was rejected access to the Mount Pleasant Data Centre, which is owned by rival Gibtelecom (wholly owned Government company), and the local regulator failed to help.

BT Group’s new CEO has released his first full year results to the end of March 2019 (Q4 18/19 financial), which finds that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has grown its coverage to 3.2 million UK premises (up from 2.6m last quarter). Take-up of FTTP is 24.54% and G.fast 1.24%.

Telecoms giant Openreach (BT) has today confirmed a significant ramping-up of their UK “Fibre First” rollout of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which will now aim to cover 4 million homes and businesses by March 2021 (up from 3m) and an ambition for 15 million by around 2025 (up from 10m).

A new UK Community Interest Company (CIC) called Pure Fibre Housing, which is part of the new i4 Technology Group that also encompasses commercial operator British Fibre Networks, has announced that it’s deploying 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband to two new build home developments in North Wales.

New UK ISP toob, which was only recently setup by several of Vodafone’s former directors (here) and soon after secured an investment of £75m (here), has announced that the south coast city of Southampton (Hampshire) will be the first to benefit from their rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network.

Openreach (BT) has called on Scottish property developers to ensure they adopt “full fibre” ultrafast broadband ISP technology, which comes after it claimed that around 3,000 new properties a year (roughly 13% of the total across Scotland) are “currently missing out” on deploying their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP).

Ofcom has published a Spring 2019 update to last year’s Connected Nations 2018 report, which uses more recent data to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. The key change is that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has risen to 7% (i.e. over 300K premises in the last 4 months, nearly 1.8 million total).

Some 60,000 homes and businesses across the city of Cambridge (Cambridgeshire, England) look set to benefit after Cityfibre announced the start of their £20m 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband roll-out, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone and is due to complete by the end of 2021.

The Whitehill & Bordon regeneration project, which is a joint venture between the Dorchester Group and UK house builder Taylor Wimpey, is working to ensure that thousands of new build homes in the area will be able to access a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTH) broadband service from the day they move in.

New ISP Zzoomm, which was launched earlier this year by Gigaclear’s founder and hopes to cover 1 million homes with 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tech by the end of 2024 (here), has said that they’ve “assembled and powered up” a full end-to-end test of their new access network ahead of its roll-out.

The wait for ISP Sky Broadband to launch a new UK range of “ultrafast broadband” packages using Openreach’s network may soon be over. Several credible sources have indicated to us that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based packages will go live in the second half of 2019 and December seems most likely.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has successfully nudged the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban Vodafone from using the term “Gigafast” to generally promote their slower Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband tiers, which offered average speeds that range from 100Mbps to 900Mbps (i.e. not only 1Gbps).
