The founder and former CEO of UK rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, Matthew Hare, has quietly used £1m of his own money to setup a new broadband provider called Zzoomm, which is an alternative network (altnet) that will focus on building 1Gbps+ Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks to homes in smaller cities and suburbs.

It’s nearly a year since the Government launched their £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which offers up to £2,500 to help businesses and homes gain access to a 1Gbps capable connection. The latest data reveals that this has helped to create a total of 3,660 connections (value of £8,756,443).

Network builder Cityfibre, which is working to roll-out a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 5 million UK premises by the end of 2024, has today signed a new £40m agreement with Hexatronic to supply the necessary passive fibre optic solutions for their deployment.

A new report from the National Infrastructure Commission warns the UK Government not to “take their eye off the ball,” particularly after it identified that a large number of previously accepted recommendations (some related to mobile and “full fibre” FTTP broadband ISP connectivity) had yet to be implemented.

Fibre optic network developer Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve appointed City Development Managers for their “city wide” 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network builds in Huddersfield (£30m project) and Leeds (£120m). Local homes will be supplied via UK ISP Vodafone.

The community built and funded rural UK ISP B4RN, which has been rolling out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to remote parts of Cheshire, Cumbria, Essex, Lancashire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Yorkshire, looks to be preparing a crowdfunding drive in the hope of raising £3m to help it expand.

The latest independent data has estimated that Cityfibre’s new £2.5bn project to roll-out a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network (Vodafone Gigafast Broadband), which aims to cover 5 million premises across 37 UK cities and towns by the end of 2024 (here), has so far reached 25,000 premises.

The latest online survey of 2,110 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 65.9% of UK respondents think spending up to £5bn of taxpayers money to ensure nationwide coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2033 is a better bet than putting the same money toward public services. But most people expect a long wait.

The Government has today set out its first ever Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP) for UK mobile and broadband services, which requires Ofcom to reflect in their work the need to build “world-class digital infrastructure“, look at mobile roaming in rural areas and tackle the so-called “loyalty penalty” etc.

A new estimate has suggested that Open Fibre Networks (OFN – formerly IFNL), which deploys Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based ultrafast broadband ISP networks to new build home developments, has grown their network coverage to reach a little over 40,000 premises across the United Kingdom.

Telecoms operator Openreach (BT) has today begun trials of a “new” civil engineering technique called “Micro Ducting“, which in some areas could be used to speed up the roll-out of their new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology to UK homes and businesses.

Cityfibre has appointed infrastructure firm Amey to build their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the Scottish city of Edinburgh (UK ISP Vodafone will supply to consumers), which is expected to cost a little over £100 million and be largely complete by around the end of 2021.

The Liberal Democrat MSP for Edinburgh Western, Alex Cole-Hamilton, has called for more co-ordination between “full fibre” broadband ISPs in the city because “residents … are at the end of their tether” due to repetitive roadworks being used to build the same type of optical fibre network several times over.

The Confederation of British Industry has warned that Brexit is “sucking the oxygen out of priorities” like deploying “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and 5G. Rural UK full fibre ISP TrueSpeed appears to be in the process of extending their Gigabit broadband capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to the large village of Peasedown St John in Somerset, which is currently home to a population of around 6,500 and would mark one of their biggest areas to date.
