Over the past few months’ we’ve seen the UK Government step-up market engagement exercises as part of work to develop a framework for their £5bn investment, which aims to ensure that “every home” can access “gigabit-capable” broadband by the end of 2025. As a result we now have a better idea of what this will look like.

The remote Shetland Islands Council (SIC) has decide to start exploring the possibility of extending “superfast broadband” coverage across the island(s) by itself, which they say is due to a “failure to deliver” under the Scottish Government’s wider £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) programme.

UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network to rural premises in several counties across England, has furnished us with a progress update and revealed that they aim to reach 40,000 properties passed by 31st March 2022 and possibly c.70,000 by 2025/26.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which specialises in building 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks to large urban apartment buildings, has reached a new agreement in Sheffield that will see their service being expanded to cover 5,400 homes in the city council’s housing portfolio.

The UK House of Lords has made a couple of key amendments to the Telecommunications Infrastructure (Leasehold Property) Bill (here), which aims to make it significantly easier, quicker and cheaper for “gigabit-capable” broadband ISPs to access big apartment blocks (MDU) when “rogue landlords” fail to respond.

The West Sussex County Council has joined other parts of the UK in helping to top-up the Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme with some of their own funding, which more than doubles the maximum value of vouchers to help local homes get a “gigabit-capable broadband” service installed.

The Welsh Government (WG) has today issued a short update on their various broadband schemes, which among other things reveals that 79,000 properties (categorised as “white premises”) still do not have access to “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) and won’t benefit from any future roll-out plans within the next 3 years.

The city of Aberdeen in Scotland is about to get a second “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network after Openreach (BT) announced that it had finally started to roll-out in the area, which is already home to an existing deployment by rival Cityfibre (Gigafast Broadband).

Broadband ISP WightFibre, which is deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network across the Isle of Wight (South Coast of Hampshire, UK), has launched a “Connected Communities Programme” to help “fully or part fund” the installation and ongoing costs of bringing fibre to community hubs and charitable organisations.

Belfast-based UK ISP Fibrus, which recently began the £85m+ roll-out of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Northern Ireland and aims to cover 145,000 premises by around 2024 (here), has now committed to help ensure that 100% of homes can access such services by the end of 2025.

New UK ISP People’s Fibre, which earlier this year revealed that they intended to deploy a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network (starting in North Wales), have abruptly pulled out of a planned roll-out in Deeside due to Openreach’s rival full fibre plans “directly blocking both our progress and investment.”

New customers looking to take out a rolling monthly contract for Hyperoptic’s service, which has deployed their “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP network to well over 400,000 UK premises (mostly large apartment blocks), may like to know that they can how benefit from a free 3 month speed boost as an added incentive.

Hull-based UK ISP KCOM, which covers a big chunk of East Yorkshire with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, has secured an additional 2 year funding facility from Lloyds Bank worth £30m. The extra investment will help expand their network into more of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Cityfibre’s civil engineering teams have now started to build a new £20m 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband ISP network in the city of Inverness (Scotland). Some of the first to benefit are expected to be in the Balloch, Culloden, Smithton, Resaurie, Westhill, Raigmore and Crown areas.
