Urban UK fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has announced that they’ve started construction on their £14m project to build a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the sea side Suffolk town of Lowestoft, which will be supplied by ISP partners Vodafone (and eventually TalkTalk).

Rural fibre optic UK ISP Gigaclear has confirmed that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in West Berkshire – built with support from public investment via the Superfast Berkshire project – is now nearly complete following massive delays. Some 14,000 local premises can already access the service.

UK ISP Ecom (Electronic Communities) has confirmed that the first customer has just been connected to their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the rural Buckinghamshire community of Ledburn, which was achieved with help from the Government’s gigabit voucher schemes.

Rural operator Broadway Partners (ISP Broadway Broadband) has today announced that they will aim to roll-out their “gigabit-capable … fibre” network to cover 500,000 UK homes and businesses by the end of 2022, starting with 5,000 in Wales (Monmouthshire) and Scotland (Perth & Kinross, Stirlingshire and Ayrshire).

The Isle of Man Government (British Crown Dependency) has agreed to invest £10m with local ISP Manx Telecom in order to help them extend the coverage of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network from 25% (10,000) of local premises today to 99% by around the end of 2025.

The Chair of the National Infrastructure Commission, Sir John Armitt, has written to the UK Chancellor in order to encourage the Government to “bring forward” their roll-out of “gigabit broadband” – particularly for towns and cities outside the South East of England – and to support this via a new National Infrastructure Bank.

Credible sources have indicated that UK ISP Sky Broadband are currently gearing up to launch their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” packages (via Openreach’s platform) from next month, possibly as soon as Monday 1st June 2020, which follows an earlier delay due to COVID-19.

Reports claim that BT could be looking to sell a significant stake in Openreach to investors as part of a strategy to help fund their £12bn roll-out of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which has set an ambition (here) to cover 20 million UK premises by the “mid – to late-2020s.“

As predicted the UK Government’s (DCMS) £68.5m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which offered up to £2,500 to help businesses and some homes gain access to a “gigabit-capable” ISP connection, will today close to new applications at 1pm after having exhausted all of its remaining funds.
