Some 13,000 council house tenants in the UK city of Derby (Derbyshire) will soon be able to access Cityfibre’s new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network, which is thanks to a new partnership with Derby City Council and Derby Homes.

Ofcom has published their Spring 2020 update for UK broadband and mobile networks, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has risen to 12% (up from 10% in September 2019) and the number of premises unable to get 10Mbps+ remains at 2% (608,000 premises). Geographic 4G coverage is now 67% (up from 66%).

Telecoms provider KCOM has announced that they’ve signed a new £3m “strategic supply agreement” with Hexatronic to help provide the necessary passive fibre optic solutions for the on-going expansion of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network, which is focused on East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Last year’s £627m takeover of Hull’s incumbent telecoms and broadband ISP, KCOM, by Macquarie Infrastructure (here) has taken another twist. Reports claim that the new owners may now look to carve up the business in order to focus on its core network and expansion across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which specialises in building 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks to large buildings, has just awoken from a period of reorganisation to announce that “nearly” 60,000 social housing homes across Leeds will soon gain access to their service thanks to a new partnership with the city council.

Mobile giant and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has published their latest results to the end of March 2020 (financial Q4 19/20), which saw them reach a total of 751,000 fixed broadband customers (up by +64K in the quarter vs +20K previous quarter). Meanwhile Mobile customers hit 18,042,000 (down by -14K vs +250K previous quarter)

UK ISP G.Network, which is currently in the process of building a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to homes and businesses across parts of Central London, has announced that all new customers will be “automatically upgraded to a symmetrical 900Mbps connection” for free, at least for awhile.

The BT Group has today published their Q4 2019/20 (financial) results and announced a tentative “target” to boost the national roll-out of their “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which could see Openreach reach 20 million UK premises by the “mid – to late-2020s.”

Belfast-based UK ISP Fibrus, which recently started the £85m+ roll-out of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Northern Ireland and aims to cover 145,000 premises by around 2024 (here), has been acquired by the infrastructure equity investment arm of M&G Plc – Infracapital.

In an unsurprising development Ofcom has today published a revision of their proposed annual work plan for 2020/21, which has naturally resulted in various delays to their broadband (e.g. full fibre competition), mobile (e.g. 5G auctions) and related regulation work due to the on-going COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis.

As such we felt as it might be useful to produce a more comprehensive update on current progress and providers for 2020 and beyond (we’ll try to keep this up-to-date).

Full fibre builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve finally started their £25m project to build a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the South Yorkshire town of Doncaster, which will aim to reach “almost every home and business” (usually 85%+). But competition will be fierce.

B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is currently working with volunteers to help fund and build a new gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network across rural parts of England, has confirmed that they’re now making a 10Gbps broadband package available to “everyone who wants it.” But you’ll need deep pockets.

Rural UK full fibre broadband provider Truespeed, which is currently rolling out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of South West England (e.g. Somerset), has today appointed one of KCOM’s former veterans – Henry West – to join its executive team as Commercial Director.

Rural focused UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is working with volunteers to help fund and build a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in remote areas, has partnered ZYXEL to offer their AX7501 router for free to 21 schools in Lancashire, South Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales.

Full fibre developer Cityfibre appears to have recently started the build phase of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband ISP network in the Suffolk (England) town of Ipswich, which is expected to cost the operator around £24 million to complete by the autumn of 2022.

A new study from Assembly Research, which was commissioned via the vested interests of Huawei, has forecast that the UK Government’s deployment of “gigabit-capable broadband” could provide £51.4bn gross value added to the economy in five years, growing to £68.8bn in 2030. But any delays could be very costly.
