Cityfibre FTTP Splicing Close Up Picture 2022

CityFibre has announced that they’ve completed their £15 million project to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the seaside town of Lowestof in Suffolk (England), which originally began during the spring of 2020 and has now covered nearly 30,000 premises (RFS).

Rural broadband ISP Wessex Internet has today announced that they’ve entered the roll-out phase of their £14m state aid supported Project Gigabit broadband contract for the New Forest area (Lot 27.01) of Hampshire (England), which will see them extend a full fibre (FTTP) network to “around” 10,500 hard-to-reach premises.

The latest Connection Nations 2023 UK digital infrastructure report has today been published by Ofcom, which finds that “gigabit-capable broadband” ISP networks now cover 78% of the UK (up from 70% in 2022), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 85-93% of premises (up from 67-77%).

The Guernsey Competition & Regulatory Authority (GCRA) has posted its “final decision” on wholesale broadband charges for the English Channel Island of Guernsey, which has called for prices to be slashed by a significantly greater amount than the 11% reduction first proposed in May 2023.

Network operator CityFibre has informed ISPreview that their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has just passed 3.37 million UK premises (3m of which are ‘Ready for Service’ by an ISP), which is up from 3 million (2.6m RFS) at the end of August 2023.

Abingdon-based rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has already extended their gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises (430k Ready for Service) across parts of 26 counties in England, has today secured a major new debt facility of up to £1.5bn to help fuel their roll-out.

The Building Digital UK agency has released their Winter 2023 (Dec) progress update on the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which is so far running live contracts and procurements worth over £2bn in state aid to help extend coverage to an extra 1.1 million hard to reach premises.

The UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has today announced that they’ve awarded the regional £33m (state aid) rollout contract for Derbyshire (LOT 3) in England to ISP Connect Fibre, which will aim to extend their full fibre network to an additional 17,000+ premises in hard to reach rural areas.

News reports claim that the Octopus Energy Group will shortly sell Shell Energy’s remaining internet and phone customers, reflecting a total base of around 480,000, to budget broadband ISP TalkTalk for an as yet undisclosed sum. The deal could be formally announced within the next few days.

The UK Government has finally revealed that Scotland’s share of the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme will be an “estimated” £450m, although market engagement work is ongoing (i.e. getting feedback from suppliers) and has yet to reach the procurement stage – this was originally supposed to happen in the autumn.

A new report from business broadband ISP and communications provider Gamma and the Centre of Economics Business Research (CEBR) has claimed that 29% of UK businesses are still “completely unaware” of the upcoming move to switch-off the old copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in December 2025.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) and nexfibre have today revealed that an additional 19,000 homes and businesses in the Essex (England) town of Brentwood, which is home to a population of over 55,000, have now been covered by their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network.

Police have been called in after vandals caused “extensive” damage to part of Netomnia’s (supported by UK ISP YouFibre) new full fibre broadband network in Liverpool, where the operator is currently investing £39 million on a large deployment project. But thankfully only a few customers have felt the impact.
