Cityfibre FTTP Splicing Close Up Picture 2022

The UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has announced that CityFibre have secured three major build contracts for Hampshire, Norfolk and Suffolk in England. The combined award is worth £488m (£318m state aid and £170m private) and will see the operator extend 10Gbps capable FTTP to 218,000 premises (500k inc. commercial build).

The latest biannual summary of UK fixed broadband coverage for H1 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have surged to reach 52.77% of premises (up from 45.13% in H2 2022) and 76.22% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 72.66%). The Scottish Government has, in response to a Freedom of Information Request, published a useful progress update on their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which reveals that 24,194 premises have now been covered by their rollout of a new “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) capable ISP network.

Network operator and broadband ISP Grain (Grain Connect) has today finally announced that they’ve launched their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network – using Point-to-Point (PTP) architecture – in the East Yorkshire (England) city of Hull. But at present it’s only available to around 20,000 premises.

Broadband ISP Zzoomm, which aims to cover 1 million premises in 85 UK towns with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network by the end of 2025, have today announced that their rollout has now covered 150,000 premises (Ready for Service) across 29 locations – an extra 50,000 since February 2023.

After some 25 years, CEO Darren Brown is retiring, and Ben Doherty will be filling his shoes.

Network builder and UK broadband ISP toob has today announced that their coverage via CityFibre’s existing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network has been expanded again. This time they’ve moved toward East Sussex and are now becoming available to homes in Worthing, Brighton and Hove.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that they’ve officially started selling services powered by their new 10Gbps capable XGS-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines, which is currently being rolled out as into new areas, via nexfibre, and as an upgrade on their legacy Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) infrastructure.

Broadband ISPs that were planning to launch faster packages based off Openreach’s future Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) tiers, which push top download speeds to 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both offer 120Mbps upstream), may have to wait a little bit longer as the operator has extended their pilot test for another 3 months.

Oxfordshire-based full fibre network builder and UK ISP Zzoomm has today published a summary of their annual financial results, which among other things reveals that their FTTP broadband network now covers (RFS) over 140,000 properties (2022: 38,000) and they’re home to over 12,000 (2022 3,700) customers.

Ofcom has published their annual 2023 monitoring report into Openreach’s independence from BT, which found that the commitments made by the operator “have generally proved to be successful“. But the regulator warns against complacency and cautions BT’s CEO, Philip Jansen, against repeating some of his recent remarks.

UK ISP Gigaclear, which has so far deployed a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 450,000 premises in rural areas (across 23 counties), has today announced that they’ve kicked off a new expansion phase in Yorkshire (England) that will see them add another 16,000 premises to the total.

Alternative network provider County Broadband, which aspires to cover 500,000 premises across the East of England with their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network by the end of 2027, has revealed that the specialist team they created to help reach the most remote homes has now completed 200 connections.

Broadband provider Yayzi appears to have quietly become the first ISP on CityFibre’s national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to launch a symmetric speed 2.5Gbps package for UK consumers, which will set you back just £45 per month on an 18-month term (inc. free wireless router). Now that’s cheap.

Fibre optic builder and rural ISP Truespeed, which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to homes in the South West of England, has been fined £16,000 by Taunton Magistrates Court after it was found to have breached Section 60 and 65 of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.
