Ofcom’s 2022 study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds has reported that the average (median) UK download rate has risen from 50.4Mbps last year to 59.4Mbps now (uploads went from 9.8Mbps to 10.7Mbps). But the performance gap between rural and urban areas has “widened” (unsurprising with so much urban FTTP build).

Some business customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media Business UK (VMO2) are now reporting that they too have seen a modest uplift in upload speeds over the past week, which suggests that the forthcoming speed boosts won’t be limited to those on Virgin Media’s residential M100 and M200 packages.

New customers taking out one of UK ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) 350Mbps, 500Mbps or 1Gbps broadband-only packages may be pleased to learn that the provider will now throw in one of their new TV streaming boxes – simply called ‘Stream‘ – for free (i.e. they’ve waived the usual £35 activation fee).

Homes and businesses on Shetland, which is a remote subarctic archipelago that resides some way north of Scotland, have suffered two breakages to different parts of their main SHEFA-2 (Faroese Telecom) submarine (subsea) fibre optic cable. As a result, a lot of broadband and phone connections on the island are being disrupted.

Residents of a block of flats in Edinburgh (Scotland) – called ‘Tytler Court‘ – have been left confused after Cityfibre, which had just completed the build of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the area, told them that they could not serve the building because it was “too tall“.. at just four-stories high.

The third Local Supplier contract under the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme – worth £7.3m – has today been awarded to rural ISP GoFibre (BorderLink), which will upgrade broadband for more than 3,750 hard-to-reach premises across North Northumberland (England).

Infracapital-backed ISP Ogi, which is currently investing £200m to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across 150,000 premises in Wales by 2025, has expanded their existing civil engineering contract with Avonline Networks (M Group Services). The move will increase Avonline’s business for Ogi three-fold.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has today responded to pressure from Ofcom by announcing the launch of their own social broadband tariff for those on benefits (Universal Credit etc.) – called ‘Essentials Broadband‘, which is one of the cheapest social tariffs on the market at £12 per month.

Broadband and Cloud Gaming ISP ZYBRE has just become the latest internet provider to hop on to FullFibre Limited‘s new wholesale network (Fibre Heroes), which is in the process of deploying a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service to “at least” 500,000 UK premises by 2025 (they’re building across 80+ towns).
