The BT Group has today reported their latest Q1 2021/22 results, which among other things reports that Openreach’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers 5.16 million UK premises (up from 4.6m last quarter) and 860,000 of BT’s retail ISP customers have taken the service.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has made a new ‘Fibre Plus‘ add-on available to customers taking out one of their various “fibre broadband” (FTTC and G.fast) packages, which from an extra £3 per month bundles in their “SuperSafe” F-Secure internet security boost, Fixed Price Plus, an Amazon Echo Dot smart speaker and Smart Plug.

UK ISP BT Consumer has today announced that they’re re-introducing 12-month contract terms as an option for new customers, although naturally you can expect to pay a few £ pounds more for these every month than their current headline deals, which sit on much longer 24-month terms.

UK ISP Country Connect, which started life back in 2016 by offering a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband network to remote rural communities in South Wales, has over the past few months begun building out their own gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network and is about to start connecting their first customers.

UK ISP BT has today refreshed some of the discounts on their FTTC, G.fast and “full fibre” FTTP based home broadband and phone packages, which aside from reducing the monthly fee has also removed the setup fee on many of their bundles for new customers.

The BT Group has published their latest Q4 2020/21 results today, which reveals that Openreach has further expanded their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network rollout target from 20 million UK premises to 25 million by December 2026. The extended target will support an additional 7,000 jobs.

Beware the backlog. Network access provider Openreach (BT) has been informing UK ISPs that new installations for their ultrafast broadband products (FTTP, Gfast and SOGfast), which had previously been delayed to 1st March 2021 onwards, are now set to restart at the later date of Monday 15th March.

Low cost UK broadband ISP TalkTalk, which last year appeared to be taking a step back from their existing YouView (IPTV) based Pay TV products (here), appears to have quietly launched a new promotion that bundles their “fibre broadband” plans with a Freesat 500GB Recordable 4K TV Box (satellite dish and cabling not included).

The Broadband Forum has published a new technical report (TR-419), which proposes a different way for “full fibre” (FTTP) builders to cut their deployment costs via a Fibre-to-the-extension-point (FTTep) approach. In short, it’s another way of cutting out the need to replace the last few metres of copper with fibre.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband may be pleased to learn that the provider is now deploying a new firmware (software) update for their latest SR203 and SR204 Sky Hub wireless routers, which the provider says should finally fix two of last year’s biggest bugs with VoIP timing and DHCP networking.

The BT Group’s latest Q3 2020/21 results reveal that Openreach’s G.fast and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) network now covers a total of 6.88 million UK premises, with 4.05m coming from FTTP alone (up from 3.5m last quarter). The take-up rate for their full fibre services has also improved.

UK ISP TalkTalk Business recently began offering a new promotion on their Openreach based “Business Full Fibre” (FTTP) broadband products for small and medium sized businesses, which on top of the existing monthly discount also gives new customers the first 3 months of service for free.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has introduced a new discount that cuts the price of their hybrid fibre G.fast based “Fibre 150” (145Mbps average download, 25Mbps upload) broadband package to just £14 per month for the first six months of service, which then rises to £28 for the remaining part of the 18 month term (£39.95 thereafter).

Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy is giving away three months of bill credit (worth up to £134.97) on their top “Superfast Fibre” (FTTC) and “Ultrafast Fibre” (G.fast) home broadband and phone packages, which will be available to take by new customers until 8th February 2021.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has added a further discount to the monthly price of their “Superfast” (average download of 59Mbps) and “Ultrafast” (145Mbps) broadband packages for new customers. On top of that they’ve also re-added the Free Anytime Talk (calls) plan to these at no extra cost.

Ofcom has published their annual Connection Nations infrastructure report, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks now cover 18% of UK premises (up from 10% last year) and 27% are within reach of a “gigabit” (1Gbps+) service (7.9 million). Meanwhile geographic 4G cover is given as a range from 79% to 85%.

A new study by WIK, which was commissioned by the FTTH Council Europe, has found that consumers are still being confused by the use (or abuse) of the term “fibre” in broadband ISP advertising, which can just as easily refer to slower hybrid connections (e.g. FTTC using copper and fibre lines) as it can a “full fibre” (FTTP) service.
