The Advertising Standards Authority‘s decision to allow slower “part fibre” (hybrid fibre) broadband ISPs to use “fibre” terminology in their broadband adverts is starting to look increasingly silly, particularly now that Ireland has joined a number of other countries by moving to ban such promotions.

Sometimes trying to figure out why a service, which was built a long time ago, hasn’t yet gone live is harder than it should be and that’s particularly true when the operator that did the work (Openreach) claims it doesn’t know the answer either. New customers of EE’s UK fixed line home broadband and phone (ADSL, FTTC and G.fast) packages may like to know that the ISP will later this morning knock another -£2 off their monthly prices for the first 18 months of service, although this will only be available to order between now and 28th July 2019.

The Community Fibre Partnerships scheme from Openreach (BT), which offers to help co-fund the cost of upgrading digitally isolated communities to receive their FTTC, G.fast or FTTP based superfast broadband ISP network, has now signed-up its 930th community and expects to deliver for 100,000 UK premises.

Last year Openreach informed ISPs that it was going to change the way it handled installation options across their broadband portfolio (here) and this is now about to start, with a new ‘Standard‘ and ‘Premium‘ Managed Engineer Install being added to their G.fast hybrid fibre “ultrafast broadband” service from 30th July 2019.

Long-time readers of ISPreview.co.uk will know that Openreach (BT) has had plenty of issues when trying to get network upgrades working at their optimal on their estate of ECI supplied street cabinets (particularly for hybrid fibre FTTC broadband ISP services). Now it looks like they might possibly be about to replace some of them.

In an interesting development Openreach (BT) has decided to change the “minimum selling rule” for their hybrid fibre G.fast broadband lines from 100Mbps to 120Mbps, which means that UK ISPs won’t be able to sell the service to customers unless their lines can achieve downloads of 120Mbps+.

Customers taking part in Sky Broadband’s new SOGEA product trial are also being provided with a new router (SR203), which is probably the long awaited successor to their current Sky Q Hub (ER110) device and will most likely be shipped alongside future G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” packages (possibly FTTC).

UK ISP BT has changed their gadget offer for June, which means that new customers who take one of their broadband bundles are being offered the choice of either a free Amazon Echo, JBL 650 Live Headphones or Samsung Tablet A when they sign-up to the service. This is on top of the usual reward cards (pre-paid MasterCard).

Openreach (BT) is slowly progressing with a future upgrade of their hybrid-fibre G.fast broadband technology, which could enable the service to harness some of the existing radio spectrum frequency being used by VDSL2 based Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines. Early tests show a possible boost to speed and coverage.

Openreach (BT) has launched a new website this week, which cleans things up quite nicely and also introduces a new availability checker for fibre optic based broadband ISP services on their UK network (FTTC, G.fast and FTTP), which now includes a choice of providers and a pre-registration page for non-FTTP areas.

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast) will today rebrand their existing range of ADSL2+ and FTTC based broadband and phone packages. On top of that they’ll be introducing some new add-ons and the information suggests that they’re preparing to launch three new “ultrafast broadband” plans (150Mbps upwards).

New customers of BT’s UK home broadband and phone packages are for a limited time being offered a free choice of either an Amazon Echo (smart speaker), JBL Bar Studio (soundbar) or Hive Smart Lights Pack when they sign-up to the service, which is on top of the provider’s now customary reward cards (pre-paid MasterCard).

BT Group’s new CEO has released his first full year results to the end of March 2019 (Q4 18/19 financial), which finds that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has grown its coverage to 3.2 million UK premises (up from 2.6m last quarter). Take-up of FTTP is 24.54% and G.fast 1.24%.

The new CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, is reportedly preparing to announce a major ramping up of Openreach’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP technology next week, which one analyst firm believes could see them target 15 million premises by around 2025 instead of 10 million.
