The latest combined Q2 2021 results from broadband ISP, TV and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 has, among other things, revealed that they plan to completely upgrade their existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFX) network – some 14.3 million premises – with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tech by the end of 2028.

It’s been a long time coming, but Sky (Sky Broadband) is finally adding High Dynamic Range (HDR) video quality to their Ultra HD (UHD / 4K) broadcasts of live sport this summer, which starts today with their coverage of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and continues from 13th August when the Premier League Football season kicks-off.

The global internet video streaming giant, Netflix, has announced that they’re in the “early stages” of preparing to add remote play video game streaming to their service “at no additional cost” and within the next year, although it remains to be seen whether that has any impact on their future price hikes.

A new YouGov survey of 2,016 UK adults, commissioned by Netgem, has claimed that up to four in five rural respondents would like more than “broadband only” offers from ISPs, but the “lack of gigabit-capable broadband availability currently prevents them from accessing the popular streaming services the rest of the nation enjoys.” Does it?

Sky’s sibling UK ISP and TV video streaming service, NOW (NOW Broadband), has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve taken the decision to drop the popular Discovery TV channel (usually included as part of the ‘Entertainment Pass‘) and related content from their platform, which will take effect from 30th June 2021.

Rupert Murdoch’s News UK (News Corp), which publishes the Sun and the Times newspapers, has reportedly expressed an interest in a partnership with BT’s Pay TV business. The telecoms giant is currently known to be considering a sale of BTSport in order to help fund their £15bn rollout of full fibre broadband.

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch.com, has hit upon the well-known problem of broadcast lag with live internet video streaming. The study estimates that nearly 15 million people (28%) have had goals spoiled because the broadcast they were watching was lagging behind the live action.

After a long wait, UK ISP BT has today finally announced the launch of a new set-top-box for their broadband-based Pay TV (IPTV) service – TV Box Pro, which among other things will finally add WiFi and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video support. But you’ll need a wait for the wireless networking to be ready.

Broadband ISP BT UK has this afternoon informed us that their BTSport TV (IPTV) video streaming app has launched a beta of their “timeline” feature for large screens. On top of that their app has now also become available via Netgem’s HD and 4K set-top-boxes, which are often sold by rival broadband providers.

Broadband ISP BT UK has informed us that their BTSport TV streaming service will make the 2021 UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League football finals “available for everyone in the UK to watch for free,” including via their YouTube channel if you’d rather not install the app.

An initial investigation by the telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today found “reasonable grounds to believe” that Sky UK (Sky TV, Sky Broadband) may have broken consumer protection rules over their apparent refusal to issue end-of-contract notifications to Pay TV customers.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has just published their latest Q1 2021 results, which saw their network coverage extend to another 80,000 premises (their slowest quarterly build so far) and their internet access base add +38,500 customers (up from +54.7k last quarter) to total 5,458,600.

Telecoms giant BT, which is currently doing everything it can to fund Openreach’s planned £12bn rollout of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband services to 20 million UK premises by the mid to late 2020s, has reportedly appointed investment bank Lazard and held tentative early talks with a view to selling their BTSport broadcasting biz.

Broadband ISP BT has informed us that their BTSport TV streaming service will be making next Monday’s (3rd May 2021) Non-League Finals Day available for anyone to watch via a range of platforms, allowing fans to watch both the FA Vase and FA Trophy finals “without a subscription“.

Cable broadband and TV provider Virgin Media UK has revealed plans to launch a new Entertainment Service, which will apparently bring lots of different streaming services “together into one place.” Oddly, the trial for this is currently only open to those with a broadband-only service (no TV or phone) on their network and a HUB 3 or 4 router.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today announced that they’ve begun to roll-out a new firmware update for their Sky Q TV boxes and service, which adds a bunch of new voice features (e.g. Voice Guidance). On top of that their Sky Go app has gained new ‘Continue Watching‘, ‘Sky Channels‘ and ‘Browse by Category‘ rails to make it easier to use.

The Government’s recently proposed idea of replacing the BBC TV Licence fee with a Netflix-style subscription model after 2027 (here), assuming universal coverage of “fast” (or gigabit) broadband is achieved, has been rubbished by a new report from the cross-part DCMS Select Committee.
