UK Digital Economy Bill Could Fuel ISP Targeting Internet Copyright Trolls

The Open Rights Group has warned that new measures in the forthcoming Digital Economy Bill 2017 could provide ammunition to copyright trolls, which have made a business out of harassing broadband ISP subscribers with letters that demand payment for suspected Internet piracy.

H2O Networks Fibre Optic Fraudsters Sent to Prison for Total of 44 Years

Last week we reported on the case of four men who had been found guilty of a £160m financing fraud that involved Total Asset Finance (TAF) and H2O Networks Ltd. (here), which was one of the UK’s early FTTH/P network pioneers. The men have now been sentenced to a total of 44 years in jail.

After years of waiting the Southwark Crown Court has found four men guilty of a £160 million financing fraud, which is a case that began in 2010/11 (here) after the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) opened an investigation into one of the UK’s early pioneers of alternative fibre optic broadband networks.

New York Takes Tough Line on Misleading Broadband ISP Speeds

ISPreview.co.uk can today confirm that the first Internet piracy warning letters (aka – “subscriber alerts” or “educational emails“) will this month begin to be sent by all of the biggest broadband ISPs. The “alerts” will be issued to those users who are suspected of engaging in online copyright infringement.

UK ISP Internet Snooping Act in Trouble After CJEU Court Ruling

The Court of Justice of the European Union has struck a blow to the UK’s controversial Internet snooping Investigatory Powers Act 2016 by ruling that EU law does not allow “general and indiscriminate retention of traffic data and location data,” except for “targeted” use against “serious crime“.

A little too lenient? The Norwich Youth Court has today handed down a Rehabilitation Order to a 17-year-old boy after he admitted to seven charges under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, two of which are in connection with last year’s cyber-attack on TalkTalk. They also took his iPhone away.

A 17-year-old boy, who is too young to be named, has today admitted to seven charges under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 in connection with last year’s cyber-attack on TalkTalk’s website and the subsequent leaking of customer details. The case is being heard by the Norwich Youth Court.

High Court Forces Big UK Broadband ISPs to Block 13 More Piracy Sites

The Westminster Magistrates Court has heard how 19-year-old Daniel Kelley, who was arrested in Llanelli (South Wales) at the end of last year on suspicion of blackmail, attempted to extort 465 Bitcoins (worth £216K) from TalkTalk following the devastating 2015 Cyber-Attack on their systems.

New Powers Allow Ofcom to Fine Mobile Operators for Poor Coverage

UK and EU ISPs Warn of “regressive” New Internet Copyright Laws

The European Internet Services Providers Association, which represents ISPs from across the UK and EU, has warned that the European Commission’s new Digital Single Market proposals include “regressive” measures that could make ISPs more responsible for the activity of their users.
