The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425-7070MHz) available to Shared Access Licences for low-power, indoor use. But the move raises questions over the future use of this band to help improve 5G and WiFi performance, which has not yet been ruled out.

The Fastershire broadband project is starting to make a new Digital Household Grant (DHG) available to homes in some rural parts of South Herefordshire (i.e. those that were originally due to receive FTTP broadband via UK ISP Gigaclear), which will enable them to help cover the installation cost of an “interim broadband solution.”

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today announced that they’re implementing JT‘s Fraud Protection Services (FPS) on their Sky Mobile service, which will introduce additional security measures to help protect customers that are carrying out financial transactions on their mobile device.

Mobile operator Three UK has today become the latest provider to join the Good Things Foundation’s charitable National Databank scheme, which aims to provide free mobile broadband data to community groups and the people they support to aid internet connectivity – either via SIM cards or vouchers.

The Government has today launched a new consultation, which sets out their proposed legal instruments to control the use of Huawei’s telecoms equipment in UK networks. The move reflects both their BAN on the company’s kit for ultrafast 5G mobile platforms and related restrictions in gigabit broadband ISP networks etc.

The Sunderland City Council (SCC) and BAI Communications have today chosen CityFibre’s new “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network in the city to provide data capacity for a new 5G small cell mobile network, which aims to provide a platform for local business growth and innovation.

Residents, visitors and businesses in the South London Borough of Sutton (England) could soon see an improvement in the area’s 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage after the Sutton Council signed two new open access agreements – one with Freshwave and the other with Ontix – as part of their Digital Strategy.

A new study from crowdsourced mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has examined how mobile broadband download speeds have changed, across 100 countries, since 5G networks were introduced. For example, average 4G and 5G download speeds in the UK were 39.7Mbps at the end of 2021, up from 21.7Mbps at the start of 2019.

New customers of mobile operator Three UK, specifically those taking their 5G based unlimited Home Broadband packages (priced from £21 per month), are now being supplied with a new hub (router) from ZTE. This appears to replace the prior model that was supplied by Huawei (their 4G hub also moved to ZTE last year).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media / VMO2) has today pledged to extend their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network coverage to reach 50% of the UK’s population in 2023 (not to be confused with geographic coverage). At the same time, they’ve also revealed that their 5G network already reaches 64% of London’s population.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents UK alternative broadband ISP networks, has called on AltNets to help it by participating in a new survey assessing the development of the country’s independent networks.

Broadband ISP Quickline has today claimed to be the “first” company in the UK to offer Standalone 5G (SA) technology, which will be used to bring superfast and ultrafast broadband speeds to rural areas. The first services will offer speeds of up to 450Mbps, but there are “plans” to hit “gigabit capability” by summer 2022.

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has just created something rather special – the “first ever” independent 4G mobile (broadband) coverage map of Newcastle and South Tyneside. The study was designed to “comprehensively” map out the region’s mobile phone “not spots” in order to help the local authority to improve connectivity.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published two new discussion papers that set out their “initial thinking” on how UK mobile markets might develop and how networks may need to evolve to meet future demand. But they do not currently propose any major new regulatory interventions or new consumer pricing rules.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has today published a new H2 2021 summary of 5G based mobile broadband performance and availability across the United Kingdom, which reveals how each of the primary network operators – EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (VMO2) – performed across 16 of the biggest metro cities.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has informed us of some changes they’ve made to their SIM-Only “Basics” plans from 6th and 9th February 2022, which relates to the introduction of new roaming options (costs), the removal of data capping (not quite what it sounds like) and the enabling of a spend manager.

The UK Government has today awarded £4m to support 8 new 2-year long pilots under the Digital Connectivity Infrastructure Accelerator (DCIA) project, which will test ways of making it easier for network operators to access and deploy 5G mobile (mobile broadband) infrastructure on street furniture and public buildings.
