Mobile operator giffgaff has this week finally jumped on both the “unlimited data” (mobile broadband) and 5G bandwagon with the launch of their new £35 “golden goodybag” plan, which is not to be confused with their existing £25 “always on” package and we’ll explain why. Get ready for caveats.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has managed to boost their 4G (mobile broadband) signal in the coastal East Sussex city of Brighton by installing small cells on top of five phone boxes, some of which appear to have been previously owned by arch rival BT (many of those are now standing disused).

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has revealed a list of the top 10 most data hungry (mobile broadband) UK cities for September 2020, which sees Bradford top the list after it saw data consumption on their network jump by 50% when compared with the same time last year. Meanwhile Coventry came a close second (47%).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today requested approval from Ofcom for them to trade some of their 4G (mobile broadband) friendly unpaired radio spectrum in the 2.6GHz band (between 2595-2620MHz) to rival O2 (Telefonica UK). At present neither O2 nor Three UK own any of their own spectrum in the 2.6GHz band.

A new report from the National Audit Office, which examines the original £1.9bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB), has warned that the Government may struggle to achieve its ambition of bringing gigabit-capable broadband to all by the end of 2025 and thus risks “leaving the hardest to reach areas even further behind.”

Locals in the rural Hampshire village of Kilmeston can now access a 4G mobile connection after Nextivity and Spry Fox Networks joined forces to donate their respective time and skillsets as a “gesture of good-will,” which has seen them deploy a new solution to help boost the local 4G mobile signal.

The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents hundreds of councils from across England and Wales, has started offering some seemingly small grants to help local authorities plan for and improve 4G, 5G and “full fibre” broadband network coverage across their areas.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has this morning announced that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network has just started to go live in the busiest parts of a further 12 towns and cities across the United Kingdom, which includes locations such as Aberdeen, Blackpool and Oxford.

Infrastructure firm Magdalene (M Group Services) has secured another contract with Mobile Broadband Network Ltd, which will see them support Three UK’s new 5G focused Unilateral Street Works Build (USWB) programme. The firm is already supporting MBNLs Notice to Quit (NTQ) and Towers & Antennas (T&A) operations.

Ofcom and crowdsourced benchmark firm umlaut have examined a sample size of 200,000 Android using UK mobile users between January and April 2020 to identify key trends. For example, people were connected to 4G for 82% of the time in urban areas, but only 76% in rural ones (most of the rest was spent on 3G).

Mobile operator Three UK has today signed another fibre optic capacity deal, this time with Colt Technology Services, in order to help fuel their latest 5G and existing 4G based (mobile broadband) network. The deal will see Colt become a “preferred provider of fibre backhaul connectivity” for the operator.

Some customers of mobile operator EE (BT) are this morning reporting a sporadic loss of 4G data connectivity (mobile broadband) on their Smartphones in parts of Southern England, such as around Bristol, Crawley, Brighton, London and Thurroc, among other areas

The latest October 2020 Mobile Network Experience Report from Opensignal has once again named EE as the best overall UK mobile network operator for 3G and 4G (mobile broadband) performance. The operator was also the first to win the new Games Experience category, which looks at areas like latency, packet loss and jitter.

A new report from the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) think-tank, which was penned by former Government advisers Alex Jackman and Nick King, has claimed that the UK’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic is “at risk without a faster 5G rollout” – to the tune of £41 billion. But they have a few recommendations to fix that.
