Crowdsourced benchmarking firm Tutela has just published their latest analysis of mobile broadband (4G) focused network performance for the United Kingdom, which predictably finds that EE continues to come top in all but one category and Three UK trails far behind the pack due to a legacy of 3G.

The UK’s former Culture and Digital Minister (2010 – 2016), Lord Vaizey of Didcot, gave his Maiden Speech this week in the House of Lords, during a debate on the new Counter-Terrorism and Sentencing Bill. As part of that he included an amusing anecdote about the impact of his earlier inability to solve rural mobile coverage.

The state aid supported West Midlands 5G (WM5G) programme has today announced 7 UK-based consortiums, which will each share funding of £2.4m to support the development of new 5G (mobile broadband) based products and services to help “transform transport across the region.”

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that they’ve appointed Belinda Finch to be their new Chief Information Officer (CIO), responsible for its Digital and ICT strategy. At the same time they’ve also named Peter Gilson as their Director of Radio Access Networks (RAN).

Did you spot it? Many did not. In a surprising move new customers looking to benefit from ultrafast 5G based data speeds (mobile broadband) on the BT Mobile (EE) network can no longer do so and will instead only be able to harness 4G connectivity, which represents a significant change of strategy.

The Scottish Government (SG) has today announced a new funding package of £4 million, which will be used to establish a new “national network of hubs” – S5GConnect Hubs – to help accelerate the adoption of ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) technology across Scotland.

The Permanent Secretary for the UK Home Office, Matthew Rycroft, has informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that the new 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN) is now unlikely to completely take over from the existing platform until early 2024 or late 2025. Previously it was due by December 2022.

A new ruling by Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has today, for the first time, interpreted the EU regulation enshrining “internet neutrality” (this was also adopted in the UK), which appears to restrict mobile and broadband operators when offering zero rating plans (i.e. unlimited data on certain services).

A new O2 commissioned survey of 1,000 adults has claimed that 20% of UK business – reflecting £205bn of economic output – was safeguarded by the power of mobile connectivity during the COVID-19 lockdown between March and September 2020, which it did by enabling many people to work flexibly and remain productive at home.

UK ISP BT has begun inviting customers to a new “Hub Equipment” trial, which is due to start at the end of September 2020 and proposes to test a “a new piece of kit that works with your BT Home Hub” (or Smart Hub router) and “makes your broadband even more reliable.”

Supermarket giant ASDA has announced that their mobile network division, ASDA Mobile, has taken the big decision to swap their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) supplier from EE (BT) to Vodafone. The new 5-year deal will see ASDA harness both 4G and ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today published their latest UK Mobile Network Index, which among other things reveals that data traffic (mobile broadband) more than doubled to travel and holiday sites, while voice calls returned to near pre-lockdown levels (i.e. they’ve reduced) and 5G users watch more online video than 4G ones.

A new H1 2020 report from benchmarking firm RootMetrics has revealed how well each UK mobile operator (Three UK, EE, Vodafone and O2) performs in terms of 5G based network availability and mobile broadband speeds across 16 cities. Overall EE offered the best availability, but in terms of performance it’s not so clear cut.

Mobile operator O2, which is working alongside key supplier Ericsson, has today announced that their new ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network has just been expanded to cover several parts (usually the busiest areas at first) of Tyne & Wear, Surrey and Lincoln.

A new study from umlaut (formerly P3), which examined the performance of 5G based mobile broadband networks across London, has found that Vodafone delivered the best overall performance across the capital city. The operator also hit the highest average download of 215.2Mbps, but they were beaten on uploads by EE.
