The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has begun to consult on an update to their spectrum sharing framework, which among other things proposes a more flexible management approach to improve local spectrum availability for 5G (mobile / wireless broadband) and the related release of more shared frequency in the busiest 3.8 – 4.2 GHz bands.

The Chancellor of the UK government, Jeremy Hunt, has today given his 2023 Autumn Statement, which among other things has announced that the new “Full Expensing” policy will be made permanent. The change will help some full fibre broadband and mobile operators to bring down the cost of their network roll-outs. Planning tweaks are also coming.

Mobile operator Vodafone is continuing to try and drum up support for their proposed merger with Three UK, which today sees them publishing new research that claims “expediting” the rollout of Standalone 5G (mobile broadband) could contribute an additional £7.4bn to the UK economy by 2030 compared to a slower deployment.

Mobile operator Sky Mobile has today announced that their 4G and 5G mobile services are being extended into many parts of the London Underground, which most likely reflects an expected extension of their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with O2 (VMO2).

A new technology has been created by a team of computer scientists at the University of Leicester (UL), which could improve speed and power consumption for users of mobile devices, particularly Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and may help reap the benefits from the next generation of mobile broadband technology, 6G.

Oxfordshire in England has today been named as one of the first places to benefit from the UK Government’s (DSIT) new £40m 5G Innovation Regions (5GIRs) fund, which was recently setup (here) to help local and regional authorities to test and adopt 5G and other advanced wireless broadband networks for homes and businesses.

Stratospheric Platforms (SPL) and BT (EE) revealed earlier this year that they were developing a UK trial to harness High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) aircraft to help extend 5G (mobile broadband) coverage into remote rural areas (here). SPL now intends to trial similar technology, during 2024, aboard a Britten-Norman Islander aircraft.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today set out the design of their planned auction for a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum frequency across the 26GHz and 40GHz bands, which is to be used by mobile network operators to deliver even faster 5G (mobile broadband) services – mostly across urban areas.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today published a new report, based on analysis carried out by WPI Economics, which reveals that a “stark digital divide” still exists “between rural and urban areas” when it comes to mobile phone and 5G (mobile broadband) coverage. If only there was a mega-merger looming that could solve it.

Mobile operator SMARTY, which is a virtual operator (MVNO) on Three UK’s national network, has just become the latest provider to field some early Black Friday discounts by cutting the price of their unlimited data (mobile broadband) plan to just £15 per month (normally its lowest discounted price has been £16).

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new real-world benchmark into mobile network performance across Hammersmith & Fulham in London, which concluded that EE delivered the “fastest network” (mobile broadband) across most homes, while Three UK came last.

The BT Group has published their latest H1 FY24 results to September 2023, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added a record of 860,000 premises to their coverage (up from 718k last quarter) and now covers 11.85 million premises, with a further 6m where initial build is underway.

Digital Catapult has teamed-up with Ofcom, Cellnex UK and Capgemini to launch its first independent 5G SA (Standalone) outdoor field-testing site – via SONIC Labs – for Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) technology. The technology tested here could eventually make it into commercial mobile networks.

Virgin Media and O2 have reportedly entered “exclusive talks” that could see them selling off a big stake in the UK’s largest mobile tower network to GLIL Infrastructure. The deal is said to value this part of their business at around £2.5bn, with any proceeds helping to fund their full fibre (FTTP) broadband and 5G mobile roll out.

OneWeb (Eutelsat), CGI and Icomera have just conducted their first demonstration of connecting a moving railway train in North Yorkshire (England), which harnessed backhaul capacity via their constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to feed onboard connectivity via a 5G mobile network.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun a review of the use and demand for fixed wireless links and related spectrum implications. Such links can be used for all sorts of things, such as delivering broadband to homes, feeding backhaul data capacity for mobile networks in remote areas and TV broadcasts etc.
