A new study from biz broadband ISP Beaming has claimed that businesses in the UK were “attacked online” some 281,094 times each by cyber criminals during 2018 (up 23% year-on-year) via 1.3 million unique IP addresses. Most of those attempts originated from China, Brazil and Russia.

Since the end of January a large number of BT and some of TalkTalk’s UK broadband customers have found themselves unable to get software updates and patches for Microsoft’s XBox Live, Windows Updates and Windows Store services, which stems from a data corruption issue that also affected ISPs in other countries.

Ofcom has today published their annual 2019 study of media use by UK children and parents, which among other things reports that just over half of parents are aware of the home network-level internet content filters being offered by the biggest broadband ISPs but only around a third actually use them.

The Crown Prosecution Service has dropped a blackmail charge against Daniel Kelley (21) from South Wales, who back in 2016 pleaded guilty to 11 offences (including blackmail, computer hacking and fraud) related to the 2015 hack of TalkTalk’s broadband ISP website.

Instead April is officially the month when the government’s new age verification system – targeted at commercial websites and “apps” that contain pornographic content – comes into force. Broadband ISPs will also be required to block sites that fail to comply with the new rules.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has confirmed that they will remove Huawei’s kit from their core 3G and 4G network within the next 2 years. On top of that they will also exclude the Chinese company from bidding on future 5G contracts (core network only), but it’s unclear if Openreach will adopt a similar policy for fixed line broadband.

A new report from internet content network Akamai has warned that broadband routers from many different manufacturers (e.g. Asus, NETGEAR, D-Link, Ubiquiti etc.), specifically those that haven’t patched some old Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) vulnerabilities, are being targeted in order to spread the EternalBlue malware.

The stated-owned telecoms operator JT (Jersey Telecom) has decided to shun recent security concerns by partnering with Chinese state-owned enterprise ZTE, which will help them to build a new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network on the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey in the English Channel).

The Old Bailey criminal court in London has today jailed two hackers – Matthew Hanley (23) and Connor Allsopp (21) – for their part in the 2015 cyber-attack against TalkTalk’s website. This ultimately cost the broadband ISP around £77 million and exposed the personal data of 156,959 customers.

The government has revealed that its new Age Verification system, which will be targeted at commercial websites and “apps” that contain pornographic content (broadband ISPs will be expected to block any that don’t comply), will not now be introduced until Easter 2019. But in the future Twitter may also be targeted.

Network security testers at 360 Netlab have identified a new botnet called “BCMPUPnP_Hunter,” which uses vulnerabilities in Broadcom’s implementation of the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol to hijack broadband ISP routers from manufactures like Billion, D-Link, TP-Link , ZyXEL etc.

Some of TalkTalk’s broadband ISP customers in the UK appear to be suffering from a Domain Name System (DNS) or routing bug, which has been obstructing their access to web pages and images on the popular WordPress (blogs) and Imgur (picture sharing) websites since the weekend (other sites are also affected).

Internet Service Providers (ISP) have warned that the Government’s push to improve cyber security and thus turn the UK into the “safest place to be online” could be at risk, unless they tackle the “convoluted regulatory system” and avoid creating “unnecessary complexity” (e.g. duplication of reporting and responsibilities).

The European Court of Human Rights has today ruled that the United Kingdom’s mass surveillance programmes, which came to light in 2013 after ex-NSA employee Edward Snowden leaked significant details to the press, were unlawful and “incapable of keeping the ‘interference’ to what is ‘necessary in a democratic society’“.
