UPDATE Modern NETGEAR Routers Hit by Command Injection Vulnerability

Do you own a modern NETGEAR broadband router (i.e. R6200, R6400, R6700, R7000, R7100LG, R7300, R7900 and R8000)? If so then we’ve got bad news because a major security flaw, which was first identified and notified to the manufacturer in August 2016, still hasn’t been completely fixed.

A little too lenient? The Norwich Youth Court has today handed down a Rehabilitation Order to a 17-year-old boy after he admitted to seven charges under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, two of which are in connection with last year’s cyber-attack on TalkTalk. They also took his iPhone away.

UK ISP TalkTalk Criticised for Questionable Router Security Advice

Last week several broadband ISPs in the UK were attacked by a new Internet worm called Mirai (here), which hijacked their routers. TalkTalk’s older DSL-3780 was one of the devices to be hit and the ISP was quick to patch the problem, but oddly they have not advised customers to change WiFi passwords.

Earlier this week we reported on how routers supplied by the Post Office, TalkTalk and others were potentially vulnerable to a modified piece of malicious software called Mirai (here), which hijacks the device. Today we learn that around 1,000 customers of KCOM’s service in Hull have also been hit.

Kaspersky Lab Reports 25% of WiFi Internet Hotspots are Unsecured

Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab has analysed 31 million WiFi hotspots from around the world and found that 22% have no security (i.e. no password or encryption), while a further 2.7% only adopt the weakest form of Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption that is easily hacked.

As expected the Government has officially announced that Mobile and fixed line broadband providers in the United Kingdom will soon be forced into the mandatory blocking of all “adult” websites; specifically those that fail to offer an adequate method of age-verification for their visitors.

Six million customers of mobile operator Three UK could be at risk after the provider admitted that a database of users (those eligible for a phone upgrade) was breached. Three people have already been arrested in connection with the situation, but the operator has done little to inform users.

The Westminster Magistrates Court has heard how 19-year-old Daniel Kelley, who was arrested in Llanelli (South Wales) at the end of last year on suspicion of blackmail, attempted to extort 465 Bitcoins (worth £216K) from TalkTalk following the devastating 2015 Cyber-Attack on their systems.
