Sky’s Group CEO Jeremy Darroch Steps Down After 13 Years

The Group CEO of Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.), Jeremy Darroch, has announced that, after 13 long years’, he is to finally stepping down and will become Executive Chairman through 2021 to ensure a smooth transition. Meanwhile the current President of Consumer Services for new owner Comcast, Dana Strong, will become Sky’s new CEO.

Sky Broadband Adds Free Anytime UK Calls and Discounts Prices

UK ISP Sky Broadband has added a further discount to the monthly price of their “Superfast” (average download of 59Mbps) and “Ultrafast” (145Mbps) broadband packages for new customers. On top of that they’ve also re-added the Free Anytime Talk (calls) plan to these at no extra cost.

Sky Q Get Amazon Prime Video as NOW TV App Hops on Fire TV

It’s been a long time coming but Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has today confirmed that customers of their Sky Q Pay TV platform can now access Amazon’s Prime Video app on their set-top-boxes. At the same time Sky’s sibling NOW TV streaming service will become available on selected Amazon Fire TV devices.

ISP Sky Broadband Sets New UK Traffic Record of 18.29Tbps

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband helped to push internet traffic up to a new peak of 18.29Tbps (Terabits per second) last Sunday 6th December 2020, which is up sharply from the previous peak of 16.6Tbps recorded only last month (here). Sky said their network coped well with this surge.

Ofcom See Average UK Broadband ISP Speeds Rise to 71.8Mbps

Ofcom has published a biannual update for their latest dataset on fixed broadband speeds, which among other things found that the average (mean) actual download speed of UK residential ISPs has increased from 64Mbps (14Mbps upload) in their May 2020 report (here) to 71.8Mbps (14.2Mbps) now.

The UK communications and media regulator, Ofcom, has launched a new investigation into Sky (Sky Broadband) over their apparent refusal to issue end-of-contract notifications to Pay TV customers. At issue is whether or not Sky’s standalone Pay TV services fall within the definition of an “electronic communications service“.

Ofcom’s new Q2 2020 consumer complaints report is out today, which names UK ISP TalkTalk as attracting the most gripes for both home broadband and landline phone, while Three UK did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

Cityfibre Sign £1.5bn of Contracts for UK FTTP Broadband Rollout UPDATE

Cityfibre has today signed £1.5bn worth of civil engineering contracts (overall total of £2.5bn), which means they’ve now secured enough capacity to extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to 5 million UK premises, with all projects scheduled to be in build by summer 2021.
