We’ve received reports that broadband and other telecoms services across part of North East England are currently being disrupted by a fire that has broken out at a core BT exchange (NCL) in Newcastle. The situation is known to be affecting connectivity for a number of UK ISPs and their customers.

Sky’s sibling UK ISP and video streaming service, NOW TV (NOW Broadband), are due to inform those that take their popular “Entertainment Pass” and “Hayu Pass” to expect an 11.1% and 25% increase, respectively, in their monthly rental prices from 1st September 2020.

The latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (July 2020) from the Institute of Customer Service, which reveals the top 50 organisations for customer service, finds that only three telecoms companies have made it into the top table – mobile operators Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile and giffgaff.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today unveiled a “raft of new features” for their Sky Q TV boxes and service, such as a new expanded view User Interface (UI), simple new show and sports centres, intuitive smart buttons, Disney+ in HDR (for the first time) and improved voice discovery. But still no Sky Q over broadband.

Once again we’ve taken our biannual look back to see how average download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs and mobile operators. Overall the COVID-19 crisis has produced a broad downward trend in H1 2020, but Virgin Media remains top for fixed lines and EE top for mobile.

Disney has confirmed that it will soon no longer be possible to watch their linear TV channels via Sky (Sky Broadband) or Virgin Media after carriage talks failed to produce an agreement. Instead the channels will be moved to the company’s new Disney+ video streaming service from 1st October 2020.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has just published their annual Bigger Picture Impact Report 2019, which reveals how much progress they’ve made toward their goal of becoming a net zero carbon business by 2030 (#GoZero). So far they’ve cut their Group carbon intensity from 6.9 tCO2e/£m revenue in 2018 to 6.54 tCO2e/£m in 2019.

Sky (Comcast / Sky Broadband) finally launched their long-awaited High Dynamic Range (HDR) TV upgrade last month (here), which was made available to those with an existing Sky Experience or Ultra HD (4K) subscription. Unfortunately those with older Sky Q set-top-boxes will now have to pay £50 to benefit.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has confirmed that a small number of jobs will be cut in the city of York, which is where they had been building a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network via the FibreNation brand until its recent sale (here) to the Goldman Sachs backed Cityfibre for around £200m cash.

After a long wait Sky Broadband has finally become the latest UK ISP to introduce an ultrafast and superfast broadband package based off Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, but sadly this will initially take the form of a small scale pilot and is currently only available to a number of FTTP eligible homes.

Customers of Sky’s (Comcast / Sky Broadband) Pay TV service – Sky Q – will be pleased to know that the broadcasting giant will today finally add High Dynamic Range (HDR) support alongside the launch of their new 4K (UHD) Sky Nature channel, but it will gradually be made available for other content too (movies, sport etc.).

Customers of Sky TV UK (Sky Broadband) might like to know that they can now play 20 classic video games for free on their Sky Q set-top-box, such as Tetris, Doodle Jump and Crossy Road. But according to our sources Sky’s delayed High Dynamic Range (HDR) upgrade is also due to appear sooner than expected.. next week.

Ofcom has published their latest Q4 2019 consumer complaints data, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for broadband, while Plusnet were the worst for landline phone and Virgin Media sat on the naughty step for Pay TV. On the flip side Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV) attracted the fewest moans from consumers.

Credible sources have indicated that UK ISP Sky Broadband are currently gearing up to launch their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” packages (via Openreach’s platform) from next month, possibly as soon as Monday 1st June 2020, which follows an earlier delay due to COVID-19.

Ofcom has published their annual report into fixed line home broadband speeds, which finds that the average download rate has risen from 54.2Mbps last year to 64Mbps now (uploads from 7.2Mbps to 14Mbps). It also examines the performance and latency of big ISPs including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and others.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a TV advert for ISP Sky Broadband after it was found to have misleadingly claimed to offer “the UK’s lowest priced superfast broadband” service, which was not substantiated by the limited comparison.
