Buying your own email address from a dedicated UK web hosting provider is cheap (c.£1-3 a month), unless you’re a former broadband ISP customer of BT (£7.50) or TalkTalk (£5) where in order to keep your address you can end up being charged significantly more for an often inferior product. Ofcom isn’t happy.

Just like clockwork Sky (Sky Broadband) has this week announced a new set of annual price hikes, which for some broadband customers will see the monthly price they pay increase by an extra £2 from 1st April 2020. But newer Sky “superfast broadband” (FTTC) and some TV plans will not be increased.

The annual Uswitch.com Awards 2020 took place last night, which among other categories saw budget focused UK ISP NOW TV scoop the win for “Broadband Provider of the Year“, while Virgin Media once again grabbed “Fastest Broadband Provider” and Sky Mobile were named “Network of the Year.” Read on for the full list.

After a long wait our sources inform us that Sky Broadband (Comcast) are imminently due to add support for Openreach’s (BT) national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to their range of both “superfast” and “ultrafast” packages, which looks increasingly likely to go live later this month (provided some issues can be ironed out first).

Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has today announced plans to transform its business and cut emissions in order to achieve net zero carbon by 2030. By comparison the UK telecoms giant BT expects to achieve the same target by 2045 and Virgin Media appears to have aligned itself with the RE100 initiative’s 2050 target.

Ofcom has today announced that they intend to toughen their existing Broadband Speed Code of Practice, which among other things requires UK ISPs to supply consumers with a personal estimate of their broadband line speed before buying. Under the new change this estimate will become more accurate, but there’s a catch.

The UK FibreNation project, which is currently being acquired by Cityfibre from TalkTalk for £200m (here), has today announced that they’ve started to roll-out their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to 50,000 premises across the town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire.

An annual survey conducted by Expert Reviews has named UK ISP Plusnet as the “Overall Winner” of their 2020 Best Broadband Awards, although EE (BT) also picked up an award for “Best Customer Service” and Virgin Media came top for “Best Speed.” Sadly TalkTalk came bottom of the customer service table.

Ofcom has today published their latest Q3 2019 consumer complaints report, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband, home phone and mobile (Pay Monthly) service. Meanwhile Virgin Media took the most flak their Pay TV service.

The latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index from the Institute of Customer Service, which reveals the top 50 organisations for customer service, finds that the only two telecoms companies to have made it into the top table – mobile operators giffgaff and Tesco Mobile – have improved their ranking.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today confirmed that their wholesale full fibre (FTTH) broadband network sibling – FibreNation – has been sold to the Goldman Sachs backed Cityfibre for £200m cash. In response Cityfibre has increased their fibre optic roll-out plan from 5 million UK premises by 2025 to 8 million.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today signed an extension agreement with Netflix’s popular internet video streaming service, which we assume means that customers will continue to have the option of adding Sky’s Ultimate On Demand (UOD) service to Sky Q for an extra £12 a month (includes seamless integration of Netflix into one bill).

UK ISP Sky Broadband has shaved a further £2 off the already discounted price of their “superfast” (Average speeds of 59Mbps) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service, which also comes with anytime UK calls and is now priced at £25 per month for the first 18 months of service (£32 thereafter). The one-off setup fee is also now free.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has, after a short delay, finally made ultrafast 5G technology available on their Sky Mobile plans at no extra cost (with VIP), which as part of their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement is based off the new network being deployed by O2 (Telefonica UK) in the 3.4GHz band.

Cable broadband and TV operator Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has announced the appointment of Severina Pascu to become its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), which will become effective from 1st February 2020 and help to lead the ISP through an “exciting new growth chapter.”
