Last week we revealed that UK ISP Sky Broadband and Sky TV were set to increase their prices from the 1st April 2019 (here), but at the time we didn’t know the details. Sky has today published this detail, which for example confirms that their FTTC “fibre broadband” packages will increase by +£2 monthly.

The annual uSwitch.com Awards 2019 event took place last night, which saw various wins for broadband ISPs Vodafone, Virgin Media, Plusnet and TalkTalk. Meanwhile Sky (Sky Broadband) scooped several categories for their Mobile service and sibling NOW TV scooped the best TV provider gong.

Ofcom’s newest Q3 2018 UK consumer complaints report has revealed that, for the first time, ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Sky Broadband won praise for seeing the fewest moans. Pay TV and Mobile providers are also covered.

Cable giant Comcast, which toward the end of last year gobbled Sky’s pan-European TV and broadband ISP business with a bid of £30bn (here), has given some early hints about what changes might result from the purchase. We’ve looked back at 2018 to see how the average download and upload speeds have changed across national fixed line broadband ISPs and mobile operators, although it’s no surprise to find that Virgin Media (fixed) and EE (mobile) are still front runners. UK ISP Sky Broadband appears to have started the January 2019 Sales early by reducing the monthly cost of their Unlimited Sky Fibre Max (63Mbps average speed FTTC) broadband and phone bundle to just £27 for the first 18 months of service (£43.99 per month thereafter).

After some disagreement Openreach (BT) and five major retail ISPs appear to have finally reached agreement on payments as part of Ofcom’s new automatic compensation system, which from “early 2019” will require them to compensate consumers for a total loss of fixed broadband and phone connectivity.

Consumer magazine Which? has surveyed 3,000 of its UK members and concluded that broadband ISP customers who remain with their provider, and don’t haggle for a better price (i.e. after their minimum contract term has ended), are being hit with so-called “loyalty penalties” of up to £220 a year on average.

Internet speed analyst firm SamKnows has this week posted the results from a limited run of their new “sensationally accurate” broadband ISP speedtest tool, which was tested last month as part of support for some research that the BBC’s Watchdog TV show was doing. Unsurprisingly Virgin Media came top, with TalkTalk bottom.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has reintroduced their 36Mbps (average speed) “Sky Fibre Unlimited” FTTC broadband and phone package, which was removed from public display at the start of October (here) and that left only their 11Mbps and 63Mbps packages. They’ve also introduced some new discounts.

A new survey by consumer magazine Which? has named the best and worst rated 12 home broadband ISPs for customer satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet (86%) come top and Sky Broadband (47%) fall to the bottom. But the survey also warned that many people are paying over the odds by choosing to remain loyal.
