A new study into the impact on broadband ISP download speeds of peak (afternoon) vs off-peak (morning/daytime) internet usage at the largest six broadband providers in the United Kingdom has revealed that Plusnet suffers the biggest proportional drop in performance, while oddly TalkTalk got faster.

Ofcom has today published their latest Q4 2017 UK consumer complaints study, which notes that TalkTalk attracted the most gripes for both fixed line home broadband and landline phone services. Meanwhile BT were the naughtiest child for both Mobile and Pay TV.

New customers considering Sky Broadband’s Unlimited Fibre (FTTC) packages can once again order the service for a reduced monthly price of just £25 for ‘up to’ 38Mbps and £30 for ‘up to’ 76Mbps with phone line rental. A £75 Prepaid MasterCard has also been included as a gift.

A new Mystery Shopper study conducted by consumer magazine Which? has revealed that major broadband ISPs are only giving the required information about connection speeds under Ofcom’s Code of Practice (CoP) less than half (47%) of the time, with some (e.g. TalkTalk) doing worse than others.

Sky UK’s sibling NOW TV video streaming and ISP platform has cut the price of their unlimited 17Mbps “Brilliant Broadband” (ADSL) and 38Mbps “Fat Fibre” (FTTC / VDSL2) packages for the first 12 months of service, which takes their monthly prices to just £15 and £20 respectively.

The annual Broadband Genie 2018 survey has today handed several awards to Plusnet, Vodafone and Virgin Media for taking the top spots in various different ISP performance categories. Overall budget ISP Plus.net scooped the most wins, as well as the headline ‘Best Broadband Provider‘ award.

The Advertising Standards Authority has banned a national UK press advert for Sky Broadband after rival ISP BT complained that the promotion’s claim of offering “Unlimited Broadband At Our Best Prices” was “misleading,” not least because they’d recently offered the same package for less.

All for a single bill. Sky UK (Sky Broadband) has today announced a new partnership with internet video streaming giant Netflix, which will enable them to bundle the full Netflix service into a new Sky TV subscription pack. This combines content from both providers side-by-side for the first time.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has announced that their premium Sky Q TV platform will, starting from March 2018, be enhanced by multiple new features (e.g. HDR content, Spotify, improved voice controls etc.). On top of that Comcast has moved to counter Murdoch with a £22.1bn takeover bid for Sky.

Last week we warned that UK customers of Sky Broadband could expect to be hit with price increases from 1st April 2018 (here) and we now have some details of what will be changing, which reflects a rise of about 3.48% on the current pricing.

Sky has quietly updated their UK website to note that “some” of their Sky Broadband prices will “increase” on 1st April 2018, which we predict could result in an average rise of around +£1-2 per month on the standard rental charge. Unfortunately Sky aren’t expected to reveal the exact details until next week.
