BT has published a number of WiFi speedtests for their new Smart Hub broadband router, which pitted the kit against rival hardware from TalkTalk, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, Plusnet and EE. The results appear to support the ISPs claim that their router “provides the most powerful wi-fi,” at least in comparison to the kit bundled by their rivals.

Customers of Sky Broadband (Fibre) are this morning reporting an unusual Internet routing or Domain Name System (DNS) related problem, which means that some websites and online servers work (e.g. IPv6 versions of Google, Facebook and YouTube) and many others (e.g. IPv4 sites) do not.

Sky has today published their latest Q2 2016 (calendar) results, which reveals that they added +24,000 new Sky Broadband subscribers in the UK and Ireland during the quarter to total 5.964 million (sharply down from +46K in Q1 and +144K in Q4 2015). But the operator still has a lot to celebrate.

Several major Internet providers and other organisations, including TalkTalk, Vodafone, Sky Broadband, XLN and the Federation of Communication Services, have today launched a new campaign that encourages business to criticise the quality of Openreach’s UK network as part of Ofcom’s Strategic Review.

New and existing Sky TV (Sky Broadband) customers who sign-up for Sky Sports are being offered the option to get the Sky Fibre Broadband (‘up to 38Mbps FTTC) service “free forever“, alternatively they can opt for a £10 per month discount off the normally £20 per month Sky Fibre Unlimited service.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today issued a Q2 2016 (calendar) trading update, which confirms that they lost another 9,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter (est. total 3,987,000) and their joint 940Mbps FTTH network roll-out with Sky and Cityfibre in the City of York (England) has covered 11,000 premises.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has mirrored TalkTalk’s recent move (here) by nudging Ofcom into launching a second parallel probe of Openreach’s (BT) Special Fault Investigation (SFI) engineer service and Time Related Charges (TRC), with both questioning whether such charges are being correctly applied.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has finally confirmed that their new Sky Q range of TV, phone and broadband bundles will from 13th August 2016 finally be able to benefit from Ultra HD (4K) TV content, which will apparently deliver the “UK’s most comprehensive Ultra HD service.”

Sky Broadband appears to have sharply reduced the price of their 50-940Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) based “Ultra Fibre Optic” (UFO) broadband packages in the city of York (North Yorkshire), which is still being jointly rolled out alongside partners TalkTalk and Cityfibre.

A few months ago Sky UK (Sky Broadband) won a WIPO domain name dispute against a website (Skysportslive.**) that was streaming their TV content without permission. But despite taking ownership Sky has not shut it down and the domain continues to offer links to pirated streams. Awkward.

Utility infrastructure builder GTC (Brookfield Utilities UK) has unveiled a new deal with property developer Bovis Homes, which will result in 3,650 New Build Homes in Wellingborough (Northamptonshire, England) being connected to their 300Mbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband network.

Blink and you’ll miss it. Sky Broadband has quietly removed their old “Lite” package, which offered a basic 2GB usage allowance and download speeds of ‘up to’ 17Mbps (ADSL2+) to Sky TV users at no extra cost. The service has been replaced by a new option, which isn’t as free as before.

UK ISPs EE, BT and TalkTalk have managed to collect the greatest proportion of consumer complaints for their fixed line broadband services, at least that’s one way of reading Ofcom’s Q1 2016 consumer complaints report. Meanwhile Virgin Media and Sky Broadband attracted the fewest gripes.

Sky Broadband has today followed up last year’s promise (here) by becoming the first major ISP in the United Kingdom enable network-level filtering by default for all new subscribers when they sign-up (i.e. Parental Controls that block access to “adult” websites).

A new report from pensions law firm Sackers, which was commissioned by Sky (Sky Broadband), has concluded that there is “no bar from a pensions perspective” to stop Ofcom from delivering functional and legal separation of Openreach from BT.

Several big UK broadband ISPs, including BT, Sky Broadband, EE, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, have lost an appeal against a 2014 ruling by the High Court, which extended court ordered website blocking to include sites that sell counterfeit goods (i.e. abuse of Trade Mark).

Openreach recently announced that their ultra-fast 330Mbps capable (soon to reach 1Gbps) Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network will reach 2 million UK premises by 2020 (here), but residential users face a limited choice of affordable ISPs and BT’s rivals see adoption problems.
