Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of their annual (2021) study of mobile network (4G and 5G) performance (broadband speeds etc.) across 37 UK cities, which concludes that O2 is the “most reliable network” – performing best in 18 of 37 cities, towns, and motorways tested, followed by EE, Vodafone and Three UK.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has just published their latest Q4 2020 results, which saw their network coverage extend to another 115,000 premises and their internet access base add +54,700 new customers (up from +47k in the previous quarter) to total 5,420,100.

A new study by tax relief consultancy Catax, which analysed the latest data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), has reported that business investment in the UK telecoms sector has fallen for a fifth consecutive quarter and plummeted by 9.2% in Q3 2020 alone.

A new 2021 Worldwide Internet Accessibility Index has just been published by comparison site Broadband Choices, which ranks 169 countries and territories on the quality of their broadband and mobile infrastructure to find the world’s most connected countries. Interestingly the United Kingdom managed to place 6th overall.

A new OnePoll survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by rural full fibre ISP Truespeed, has found that 67% of parents say they need “fast broadband” because they work from home, but only 36% claim to have a “highly reliable” home connection and 46% say they suffer “broadband problems” at least once a week.

A new YouGov survey of 4,328 British adults, which was commissioned by mobile operator O2, has found that 36% of Brits currently working from home (1,351 of the respondents) are regularly switching to mobile broadband (4G / 5G data) to stay online and 61% say it’s made the working experience better.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has published the results from their annual (2020) survey of 430 members, which found that just 20% of farmers had access to fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 17% last year) and 11% have no indoor mobile signal at all (better than the 15% recorded last year).

A new study commissioned by O2 UK has predicted that the first phase of the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with Vodafone and Three UK, which will see all three mobile operators working to build and share 222 new 4G (mobile broadband) masts (here), could increase the turnover for rural businesses by £187.7m per annum.

A new report from consultancy firm Hatch, which was commissioned by the BT Group, has estimated that the telecoms and broadband giant generated a £24bn contribution to the UK economy (expressed as GVA – Gross Value Added) during the 2019/20 financial year and supports 300,000 full-time jobs (directly and via suppliers etc.).

The BT Group’s latest Q3 2020/21 results reveal that Openreach’s G.fast and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) network now covers a total of 6.88 million UK premises, with 4.05m coming from FTTP alone (up from 3.5m last quarter). The take-up rate for their full fibre services has also improved.

A new survey has warned that 24% of UK businesses (33% for SMEs) aren’t aware of the plan to withdraw traditional copper line phone services (PSTN – WLR, LLU SMPF etc.) by December 2025, which will see both homes and businesses being migrated over to a modern all-IP based network for broadband and voice connectivity.

Ofcom’s latest Q3 2020 consumer complaints report has just been published, which names UK ISP Vodafone as attracting the most gripes for home broadband, while Plusnet did the same for landline phone, Virgin Mobile were the worst for Mobile services and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today published their latest UK Mobile Network Index for Q4 2020, which among other things shows that data traffic over their 5G network (mobile broadband) grew by 40% month on month from October to December. Video streaming services also saw a 30% month on month increase.

Consumer site Expert Reviews has posted the winners of their annual ‘Best Broadband Awards 2021‘ event, which surveyed their readers in an effort to identify the best UK Internet Service Providers across a range of different categories. But the overall winner, by a comfortable margin, came out as Zen Internet.

New research from professional services firm PwC has forecast that the productivity and efficiency gains enabled by the rollout of ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) technology will drive business, skills and service change worth £43bn to UK GDP by 2030. The healthcare sector is also expected to see the biggest impact from this.

The Government has posted a useful State Aid evaluation of the UK National Broadband Scheme (Superfast Broadband Programme), which identifies a number of strong benefits from the £1.9bn (public) programme that has so far helped to extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) connectivity to nearly 97% of premises.

The latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (Jan 2021) from the Institute of Customer Service, which reveals the top 50 organisations for customer service, finds that only one telecoms operator has made it into the latest list – Tesco Mobile, albeit with an improved score and ranking.
