Ofcom has published a Spring 2019 update to last year’s Connected Nations 2018 report, which uses more recent data to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. The key change is that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has risen to 7% (i.e. over 300K premises in the last 4 months, nearly 1.8 million total).

Fibre optic comms provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms has been chosen by Jisc to launch the Janet South network. The rollout will see 7 more BT exchanges unbundled and will utilise 4 existing Points of Presence (PoPs) to provide improved connectivity to 11 UK universities and 80 local colleges.

Consumer magazine Which? has used data from its consumer speedtests to warn that just 13 constituencies in Scotland (unclear if they mean burgh or county constituencies) are achieving a broadband speed of over 20Mbps and half of tests across the UK failed to hit 10Mbps. But this interpretation has some big flaws.

Ofcom has today published their 2019 survey of UK service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest broadband ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (79%) and Tesco Mobile did the same for mobile (90%).

Openreach’s (BT) Director of Infrastructure Solutions, Matthew Kirkman, has revealed that they’re now rolling out 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks at a rate of 20,000 UK homes passed per week (3x quicker than last year) and 88% of the new build developments they work with are opting for it.

Consumer magazine Which? has released some results from their latest 2019 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Vodafone as the worst overall provider. By comparison Three UK came top of the big four operators, although smaller virtual operators like giffgaff tended to fair the best.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has revealed how they hope to unbundle a total of 700 exchanges from BT by 2021, which should enable their own network to cater for more than 80% of the UK with a total core capacity of 5Tbps (Terabits per second); before potentially rising to 987 exchanges by around 2025 (25Tbps core network).

The Government’s £1.7bn publicly funded Broadband Delivery UK scheme, which has so far helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 5,076,552 extra premises since 2013, has today published its latest take-up data to the end of 2018. The good news is it continues to grow and boost coverage.

A new batch of independent data has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) style ultrafast broadband ISP networks are now available to 2,047,954 premises and Openreach (BT)’s infrastructure accounts for half of those (1,003,094 premises). Meanwhile the national roll-out from all operators is continuing to ramp-up.

A new survey of around 6,500 respondents has revealed that most UK consumers who haggled for a lower price with one of the largest fixed line broadband ISPs or mobile network operators were successful in saving money. Sky Broadband (Sky TV) appeared to be the most likely to give a discount.

A new study using crowd-sourced data (consumer speedtests) is helping to reveal how the market share of different broadband ISP technologies (ADSL, FTTC, FTTP, G.fast, Cable and Wireless) has changed over the past seven years, which sees older pure copper line connections decline as hybrid fibre solutions dominate.

A new report from Barclays Corporate Banking has predicted that the roll-out of new ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) networks across the United Kingdom could increase annual business revenues by between at least £8.3bn (pessimistic outlook) to £15.7bn (optimistic outlook) come 2025.

The latest biannual survey of consumer satisfaction from consumer magazine Which? has criticised UK ISPs BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Vodafone for continuing to come bottom of their table. Meanwhile Zen Internet was praised for “comfortably taking top spot in our rankings.“

After years of waiting we’re pleased to report that the United Kingdom has finally been included into the FTTH Council Europe‘s annual 2019 country ranking, which lists the countries with the strongest subscriber penetration of “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) ultrafast broadband ISP networks. Predictably.. we’re at the bottom.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has announced that residents in the Poppleton area of York are the latest to get access to their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which as reported last week (here) has already covered 33,000 premises in the city and should reach 55,000 by 2020.

The latest forecast from the Government’s £1.8bn Broadband Delivery UK programme appears to now be predicting that fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable ISP networks will cover 97% of premises by March 2020, which is slightly down on some previous 98%+ remarks (not official targets).

A new report from Opensignal, which used crowd-sourced data to examine 4G network performance across 15 of the United Kingdom’s largest cities, has named Bristol as the fastest for mobile broadband download speeds with an average of 28.2Mbps. By comparison Sheffield was bottom on 19.9Mbps.
