The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned two email adverts for TalkTalk’s ISP after they “misleadingly” told customers that “your usage is affecting your broadband service” and “you’ve hit your limit 3 times in 30 days” before recommending an upgrade to “fibre“, even though neither user was at such a “limit“.

Former customers of TalkTalk’s broadband service (going as far back as Tiscali) who continue to use their old email accounts may be displeased to learn that the ISP is going to “start charging” them from £5 a month or £50 per year for access (more than a dedicated email host). Plus the ISP will delete accounts that don’t pay.

A new YouGov survey of 4,100 UK people, which was commissioned by UK ISP TalkTalk, has claimed that for 50% of respondents access to “reliable broadband” is more important than their partner and 7 in 10 would even prioritise it over their family pet (this may depend what they mean – in the practical sense – by “prioritise“).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has concluded their review of broadband ISP pricing and agreed industry changes that are designed to protect “vulnerable” consumers (e.g. pensioners) from “loyalty penalties,” which references how loyal customers (those who don’t switch or renegotiate) often end up paying more.

The FibreNation (TalkTalk sibling) company, which hopes to deploy a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to cover 3 million UK premises (if it can find enough investment – about £1.5bn), has today appointed Darren Woods as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Belinda Fearnley as its Head of HR.

Low cost UK ISP TalkTalk has today responded to Ofcom’s wider call for greater industry fairness to consumers by unveiling a new set of “pricing commitments“, which they claim will ensure that “vulnerable customers can benefit from the best available deals” and receive the “most appropriate support” to meet their needs.

A major outage of the Yahoo! email service is today impacting various UK internet service providers that use the same platform, such as Sky Broadband, BT and TalkTalk, among others. The problems began at around 7am this morning and appear to be on-going this afternoon.

UK ISP TalkTalk Business (TTB) has appointed Jonathan Kini as its new Managing Director. Jonathan has previously held senior roles at both cable broadband operator Virgin Media and mobile giant Vodafone, as well as working for Drax Plc as CEO of the Customer Business and acting as an advisor to the Bank of England.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk appears to be having some success in courting interest from investors in their sibling wholesale FibreNation company, which proposes to build a 1000Mbps “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband network to cover 3 million UK premises. The latest to enter the ring are investment firms iCon Infrastructure and Macquarie.

A new report claims that the Goldman Sachs backed Cityfibre project, which is in the process of investing £2.5bn in order to rollout a 1Gbps FTTH broadband ISP network to 5 million UK premises by the end of 2025 (here), could be looking to hoover up TalkTalk’s sibling wholesale FibreNation company.

27th August, 2019 (6 Comments)

The FibreNation project, which was established by UK ISP TalkTalk and aspires to deploy a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to cover 3 million premises, has today confirmed that the West Yorkshire town of Dewsbury (population of 65,000) has been added to their initial rollout plan.

Budget ISP TalkTalk appears to have responded to Vodafone’s recent promotion by discounting the cost of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based “Faster Fibre with Speed Boost” (67Mbps average) broadband and phone bundle to just £23.50 per month. Confusingly this makes it the same price as their slower 38Mbps plan.

One of TalkTalk’s TV adverts has been pulled after the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found it to be incorrect, which occurred because the connection speeds referenced in the broadcast’s voice-over did not match the speeds being promoted in the broadband provider’s on-screen text.

The FibreNation project, which was setup last year by budget ISP TalkTalk and aspires to rollout a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to 3 million UK premises, has today signed a “multi-million pound” partnership with civil engineering firm Makehappen Group to help support its “UK-wide” deployment.

A new survey of 1,000 broadband customers, conducted by Which?, has revealed that 40% had been with the same ISP for 10 years and only 15% had been with their provider for less than 2 years (likely to reflect recent switchers). The reasons for this tended to vary between users of BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has boasted that their broadband, phone and TV bundle offers consumers the “cheapest prices and the most convenient way to watch all of the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Europa League action in one place,” which they claim could save you £463 vs Sky (Sky Broadband) on a 12 month term.

23rd July, 2019 (11 Comments)

A new report from Ofcom has revealed that Plusnet attracted the most UK consumer complaints for fixed line broadband and phone in Q1 2019, while Vodafone attracted the most gripes for Mobile and TalkTalk for Pay TV services. On the flip side Sky Broadband (Sky TV) and EE generated the fewest fixed line moans.
