We’ve looked back at 2018 to see how the average download and upload speeds have changed across national fixed line broadband ISPs and mobile operators, although it’s no surprise to find that Virgin Media (fixed) and EE (mobile) are still front runners. After some disagreement Openreach (BT) and five major retail ISPs appear to have finally reached agreement on payments as part of Ofcom’s new automatic compensation system, which from “early 2019” will require them to compensate consumers for a total loss of fixed broadband and phone connectivity.

Which? Warn Broadband ISP Loyalty Penalties Cost Users up to £220

Consumer magazine Which? has surveyed 3,000 of its UK members and concluded that broadband ISP customers who remain with their provider, and don’t haggle for a better price (i.e. after their minimum contract term has ended), are being hit with so-called “loyalty penalties” of up to £220 a year on average.

Internet speed analyst firm SamKnows has this week posted the results from a limited run of their new “sensationally accurate” broadband ISP speedtest tool, which was tested last month as part of support for some research that the BBC’s Watchdog TV show was doing. Unsurprisingly Virgin Media came top, with TalkTalk bottom.

The latest trading update from TalkTalk has revealed that the ISP increased their on-net broadband customers to total 4,243,000, which is up by +24K during quarter to the end of Sept 2018 (vs +80k in the previous quarter). On top of that they’ve unveiled the “FibreNation” roll-out plan for their “full fibre” (FTTH) network.

Two Hackers Jailed for 2015 Cyber Attack Against UK ISP TalkTalk

The Old Bailey criminal court in London has today jailed two hackers – Matthew Hanley (23) and Connor Allsopp (21) – for their part in the 2015 cyber-attack against TalkTalk’s website. This ultimately cost the broadband ISP around £77 million and exposed the personal data of 156,959 customers.

ISP TalkTalk Joins Black Friday Club with FTTC Broadband Price Cuts

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today launched a new range of 2018 Black Friday discounts, which among other things sees their 36Mbps (average speed) FTTC based “Faster Fibre” broadband and phone package drop to just £19.95 a month for the first 18 months of service.

A new survey by consumer magazine Which? has named the best and worst rated 12 home broadband ISPs for customer satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet (86%) come top and Sky Broadband (47%) fall to the bottom. But the survey also warned that many people are paying over the odds by choosing to remain loyal.

Which? Identifies the Most Moaned About UK Broadband ISPs

A new survey of 7,026 broadband customers, which was conducted by consumer magazine Which? in July 2018, has examined 12 of the biggest UK home broadband ISPs and found that customers of Virgin Media were the most likely to experience problems with their service. Meanwhile subscribers to Zen Internet had the least moans.

TalkTalk Users Hit by DNS Woes on WordPress and Imgur Sites UPDATE

Some of TalkTalk’s broadband ISP customers in the UK appear to be suffering from a Domain Name System (DNS) or routing bug, which has been obstructing their access to web pages and images on the popular WordPress (blogs) and Imgur (picture sharing) websites since the weekend (other sites are also affected).

The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has today confirmed that they intend to pursue tentative plans to setup a new “administrative site blocking” process (as opposed to requiring a High Court injunction), which would require broadband ISPs to block customers from accessing websites that facilitate internet piracy.
