Credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that customers of UK broadband ISP Plusnet (part of the BT Group) may soon lose the ability to directly add BT Sport TV to their service (this currently costs from an extra £17.15 a month), with the feature allegedly due to then be closed by June 2023.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today announced that customers ordering one of their “Full Fibre” (FTTP) packages will also, optionally, be able to add both their Android TV powered Pay TV service and a NOW TV Entertainment Membership for just £9.99 a month with no up-front costs.

The UK Government’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO) announced an interesting new campaign in partnership with Meta yesterday, which among other things decided to label “password sharing on streaming services [e.g. Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.] … without paying a subscription” as breaking copyright law. That’s a lot of new criminals.

Users of the NetgemTV service, which usually ships to UK consumers as part of a set-to-box based Pay TV bundle from their broadband ISP, may be pleased to learn that they’ve added 15 additional channels to their platform “at no extra cost“. In addition, they’ve added 10 new games to their recently launched video game hub (total of 30).

The Director-General of the BBC, Tim Davie, has given broadband ISPs and mobile operators something extra to think about after he proposed that the corporation could plan to “switch-off” terrestrial TV and radio signals by the end of 2030. In their place, the broadcaster would focus on online content and streaming (e.g. iPlayer).

The latest Q3 2022 results from broadband ISP and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has seen their fixed broadband base reach 5.63m customers (up by 19.1k in Q3 vs 16k in Q2), while their gigabit network coverage added 115,000 premises (3 million delivered via Project Lightning) and 5G is available in over 800 towns and cities.

New customers taking out one of UK ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) 350Mbps, 500Mbps or 1Gbps broadband-only packages may be pleased to learn that the provider will now throw in one of their new TV streaming boxes – simply called ‘Stream‘ – for free (i.e. they’ve waived the usual £35 activation fee).

As expected, Sky (Sky Broadband) has today made their new standalone Sky Stream TV product available to UK consumers, which uses your home broadband ISP and WiFi connection to stream Sky’s on-demand video content and live TV channels directly to your existing TV without a satellite dish (no engineer install necessary).

The global internet video streaming giant, Netflix, has announced that it will launch a cheaper ‘Basic with Adverts‘ plan that costs just £4.99 per month on 3rd November 2022 at 4pm GMT. On top of that, those who take their existing £6.99 ‘Basic‘ plan will gain access to higher resolution video content (720p instead of just 480p).

Internet video streaming giant YouTube has caused somewhat of a storm after they conducted an “experiment” that locked the ability of some users to stream videos in 4K (UltraHD) behind their Premium subscription service, which usually costs £11.99 per month and includes ad free access with offline downloads.
