Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their combined results for Q1 2022, which confirms that their plan to upgrade existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) network areas with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology has now begun. But their fixed line broadband base took a hit.

UK ISP BT has today enhanced their top two fastest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages – 500Mbps and 900Mbps – by adding a “free” Xbox Game Pass Ultimate – running for 6 months on 500Mbps and 12 months on 900Mbps (costing £10 per month thereafter).

Internet traffic across UK broadband ISPs surged last night as people tuned in to stream the Champions League semi-final and to download the latest 40GB (GigaByte) ‘Season 3’ update for the popular ‘Call of Duty Warzone’ video game. As a result, TalkTalk set a new peak traffic record of 8.715Tbps (Terabits per second).

After a lot of beta testing, broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) UK has today officially launched their new TV streaming (IPTV) product – called ‘Stream‘ – that makes popular TV channels, on-demand apps, and movies available to customers via a single small set-top-box – all via your internet connection on a 30-day rolling contract.

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE, which is available to broadband customers across both FTTC (VDSL2) and FTTP networks from various operators (e.g. Openreach), has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that it plans to launch a new multi-play home entertainment platform this summer via their new ‘One Box‘ TV set-top-box (STB) device.

Last year’s launch of Sky Glass, which made it possible to stream Sky’s TV channels and content over a UK home broadband ISP connection (here), received a mixed reception because customers could only do this by adopting a special Sky branded TV. But the good news is that you’ll soon be able to do this without their TV.

Budget conscious UK ISP TalkTalk has today finally made their new Netgem powered pay TV (IPTV) platform and “TV 4K Box” device available to both new and existing customers on their fibre broadband plans (FTTC and FTTP). On top of that, the provider also claims to be the “first ISP in Europe” to launch TikTok on a TV set-top-box.

The most popular broadband-based Movie and TV video streaming service, Netflix, has today announced that they are to hike the monthly prices on all three of their plans for new and existing customers, with even the entry-level ‘Basic‘ plan going up in price for the first time in a decade!

Broadband ISPs BT and TalkTalk look set to keep their respective YouView based TV services running until March 2024 after they reached a new Shareholder Agreement with the platform’s other Joint Venture partners in the broadcasting sector, including ITV, the BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

Owners of UK ISP BT’s latest set-top-box hardware for their broadband-based Pay TV (IPTV) service – TV Box Pro – have recently begun complaining about a series of new bugs related to problems with recordings (e.g. scheduled recordings failing to record) and some apps not working. But there’s a partial fix.

Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their combined results for Q4 2021, which finally confirmed their long-awaited plan to extend the operator’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover around 23 million UK premises by 2027 (7 million more than today) via a new Joint Venture.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that it will make the operator’s full range of premium kids entertainment and learning-based programmes – a total of 12 kids pay TV channels (e.g. Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon) – available for all TV customers until 8th March 2022, “at no extra cost.”

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that they’re giving all of their Pay TV customers access to more than 20 “documentary, entertainment and music channels” at “no extra cost” throughout February 2022, which includes a variety of channels such as Comedy Central, MTV, Sky History and more.

Reports over the weekend appear to have all but confirmed that the UK Government will end the existing BBC TV licence fee from 2027 and replace it with a new funding model, which could include a Netflix style subscription model, government grants, more advertising or possibly a levy or tax on consumer broadband ISP bills etc.

Customers of the Sky Q TV platform have, for the past few weeks, been reporting sporadic problems when attempting to download programs to their set-top-box (e.g. intermittent failed downloads with their On Demand content), which seems to occur regardless of whether users are on a Sky Broadband connection or a different ISP.
