Budget UK ISP TalkTalk, which back in October 2021 signed a contract to harness Netgem‘s pay TV platform (here), has begun to offer a related “TV 4K Box” device for certain customers as part of a “test“. But it’s currently only available to those on their “Future Fibre” (FTTP) broadband plans (Openreach, CityFibre etc.).

Internet provider TalkTalk has today published the latest volume (4) of their UK “Internet Insights” report, which this time around focuses upon the impact of “silver surfers” and reveals that broadband usage among pensioners has grown by 69% from pre-pandemic levels (driven by increased streaming and online gaming).

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) are this morning reporting that the operator appears to be suffering from a major national outage of their TV platform – impacting their Live TV, On demand, and TV GO service. The issue started at about 10:30am and is currently ongoing.

Internet traffic across UK broadband ISPs surged last night on the back of several Premier League Football matches, which were heavily streamed online via Amazon’s Prime Video service. As a result, budget internet provider TalkTalk saw record network traffic, which peaked at 8.1Tbps (Terabits per second).

Owners of the first generation of YouView (IPTV) powered Pay TV set-top-boxes (e.g. the retail Humax T1010), including the Humax T1000 from UK broadband ISP BT and the Huawei DN370T from TalkTalk (TT Plus Box), have been informed that they will “no longer be able to access” the ITV Hub app from January 2022.

UK broadband ISP BT has announced that their “flexible” Pay TV packages – specifically Entertainment, Big Entertainment, and VIP TV – will now include the popular Netflix internet video streaming service for one monthly payment and on one bill. In addition, the aforementioned TV packages will all be half price for 3 months.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today introduced a new package that bundles a home “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) service with a cheaper subscription to Netflix’s popular internet video streaming service, albeit without requiring new customers to take out a traditional Pay TV service first in order to benefit.

Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their latest joint (merged) results for Q3 2021, which reveals that their full fibre (FTTP) network rollout reached another 67,000 UK premises in the quarter (down from 89K in Q2) and their total fixed broadband customer based hit 5,536,400 (up by +42.3K in Q3 vs +35.7K in Q2).

The first of Sky’s customers recently began to receive the operator’s new Sky Glass TV product. But quite a few of the early adopters appear to be running into a variety of problems and bugs with the operator’s attempt at a Sky branded TV, which streams their content via your broadband ISP instead of a satellite dish.

Pay TV solutions provider Netgem this week reported that the decision by Origin Broadband UK to appoint an administrator (here), which came after the ISP struggled to tackle over £20m in losses, resulted in the TV firm taking the decision to “write-off” some £422,000 (500,000 Euros) worth of “unpaid invoices“.

Sky UK (Sky Broadband) has today announced that customers of their Sky Q TV and Sky Glass TV service and devices will, by the end of 2021, finally be able to get access to Apple TV+ content. NOW TV users in the UK will also be able to both sign-up and purchase any NOW Membership via the NOW app on Apple’s devices.

But this time there’s no mention of a trial.

Budget UK broadband ISP TalkTalk has today officially signed a contract with pay TV solutions provider Netgem, which will see the provider launch a new “TV 4K” product for their 4.2 million customers that will be powered by the Netgem TV platform and an apparently “frictionless ‘end to end’ operating model.”

After all the leaks and rumours, Sky UK (Comcast) are this morning finally taking the wrappings off their new Sky Glass product, which we can confirm is essentially a Sky branded TV that streams their content over your home broadband ISP and WiFi 6 connection (i.e. no satellite dish and no set-top-box required).

A number of reports today have claimed that TalkTalk will, effective from October 2021, partner up with Netgem TV to offer their UK home broadband customers access to a new set-top-box for premium TV (IPTV) services, but only those on their “ultrafast broadband” (e.g. FTTP) plans will be able to take it.

More details are starting to leak our way as Sky UK (Sky Broadband) get closer to taking the wraps off their future TV via internet connection (instead of a satellite dish) service. We now understand that the Sky over IP (SoIP) service will launch as part of an integrated QLED TV product line (pictured), called Sky Glass.
