Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has confirmed that their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband network, via wholesale network partner nexfibre, is being expanded to cover the town of Crewe in Cheshire (England).

Ofcom’s latest quarterly (Q1 2023) study of UK consumer complaints has named and shamed TalkTalk for attracting the most consumer gripes about both fixed line broadband and landline phone services (making a change from Shell Energy), while BT did the same for both Pay Monthly Mobile and Pay TV services.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have published their Q2 2023 results, which saw their fixed broadband base fall by -15,300 in the quarter to total 5,667,300 (vs 28.8k added in Q1) and the operator confirm earlier reports (here) of 2,000 job cuts. But they also accelerated their nextfibre FTTP reach by 175,500 premises.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has published their latest biannual H1 2023 study of UK mobile network (4G and 5G) and mobile broadband performance, which sees EE (BT) continue to pick up awards across all of the categories. But in terms of 5G data speeds, Three UK remains the operator to beat.

The battle for which broadband ISP can offer the UK’s fastest WiFi guarantee has continued today after Virgin Media (VMO2) announced that they were boosting their own guarantee from 20Mbps to 30Mbps at no extra cost (i.e. a minimum download speed of 30Mbps via WiFi in every room, or you get £100 back).

Network operator nexfibre, which is working with broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) – at wholesale – to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across up to 7 million extra UK premises, has today secured an additional £250 million debt investment from the UK Infrastructure Bank (UKIB).

The national telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has this morning announced that they’ve opened an investigation into the service cancellation practices of UK broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2), which follows customer complaints that suggest the “company is making it difficult for them to cancel their services“.

The Digital Connectivity Forum (DCF), an industry think-tank, has today announced that the UK’s largest mobile and broadband providers, including BT, Three UK, and Sky Broadband, among many others, have agreed to work together to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the telecoms supply chain.

Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net service, has published their latest Q1-Q2 2023 (H1) study into the performance of 5G based mobile broadband networks in the United Kingdom, which once again finds that Three UK continues to deliver the fastest median download speed (265.75 Mbps).

A new study by Uswitch, which adopted a Flesch–Kincaid readability test to examine the Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) of all the major UK broadband ISPs, has concluded that Sky Broadband’s terms are the “trickiest” for customers to understand. On the other hand, Plusnet’s terms were found to be the “most straightforward“.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has announced that customers of their pay TV service(s), specifically Virgin TV 360 or Stream, can now access thousands more TV shows and movies from Pluto TV, directly via their set-top-box and “all at no extra cost“.

A new survey of 3,975 UK people who had a contract for a home broadband ISP in December 2022 and January 2023, which was conducted by Which?, has found that 53% have experienced “connection issues” in the past year (e.g. very slow speeds, connection drop-outs etc.) and Sky Broadband were the worst offender.

The latest biannual summary of UK fixed broadband coverage for H1 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have surged to reach 52.77% of premises (up from 45.13% in H2 2022) and 76.22% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 72.66%). Customers of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) email service are once again reporting problems today. The situation occurred after the provider attempted to conduct maintenance on the service which, instead of making things better, only appears to have resulted in a new set of “intermittent issues” (connectivity problems).
