Ofcom has published their 2022 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. For example, Vodafone attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while BT secured the highest (88%). But overall, service quality has improved since COVID-19.

Small business customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media Business (VMO2) may be pleased to note that their long wait for the operator to finally launch a 1Gbps (Voom Fibre) package may be about to end. The provider has just started inviting existing subscribers on their slower tiers to take a new gigabit plan.

Ofcom has proposed to tweak their 2019 voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which will extend the current ‘Right to Exit‘ (i.e. when an ISP fails to correct a problem with broadband speeds) to the latest definition of service bundles. It will also require FTTP and cable ISPs to provide details on observed line speeds.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their combined results for Q1 2022, which confirms that their plan to upgrade existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) network areas with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology has now begun. But their fixed line broadband base took a hit.

In a sign of things to come, it’s interesting to note that the recent free trade agreement between Australia and the United Kingdom included measures that require both sides to provide injunctive relief for website blocking by broadband ISPs – targeted at sites that are found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has kicked off the week by launching a different kind of discount on their standalone broadband packages – called “Solus Boost“, which essentially cuts the price of all their packages – from 100Mbps to 1Gbps – to just £28 per month for the first 6 months of service (original pricing thereafter).

Ofcom has today posted some additional analysis on the impact of their End-of-Contract Notifications (ECN) system, which reveals that customer re-contracting on major broadband ISPs has increased as a result of its introduction – varying from a rise of 13% on Plusnet to just 3% on TalkTalk.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has responded to a BT complaint by banning a UK website and TV advert for Virgin Media’s Gig1 Fibre broadband package, which saw the operator promote itself as the “UK’s fastest major broadband provider“, after they failed to include sufficient information to verify their comparisons.

A new partnership was recently signed that will enable ISP Virgin Media (VMO2), via a dual lay network (i.e. separate fibre cables laid in a single duct), to deliver its ultrafast broadband, TV, and phone services to new build homes on sites developed through the Open Fibre Networks Limited (OFNL / GTC / BUUK) duct infrastructure.

Ofcom’s latest Q4 2021 (calendar) study of UK consumer complaints has named Shell Energy as attracting the most gripes for fixed broadband services, while TalkTalk did the same for landline phone and Virgin Mobile took flak for Pay Monthly mobile services. Broadband ISP Virgin Media Business (VMO2) has today confirmed that they’ve reduced the prices of their high-capacity fixed wholesale services to businesses, ISPs and rival networks across all Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) bandwidths and National Ethernet services. Some by as much as 2.8% per annum.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has this week informed customers that they’re currently “updating” their systems so that they can be “even more innovative, efficient and streamlined“, which among other things is expected to result in “better customer service“, a better sales experience and “quicker development of new products“.

Consumer site Expert Reviews has posted the winners of their annual ‘Best Broadband Awards 2022‘ event, which surveyed consumers in an effort to identify the top UK Internet Service Providers (ISP) across a range of different categories. The overall winner this year was Plusnet.

Some broadband customers on UK ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) fixed line network are reporting a noticeable increase in peak time latency – usually between around 5:30pm and 11pm, which appears to have begun at around the end of last week. This can see latency times become very slow (double or more vs the usual baseline).

The Building Digital UK team has published a new Public Review (PR) consultation for Wales, which reveals that some 327,174 premises might need state aid help under the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme in order to access 1Gbps speeds (rising to 984,806 if including ‘Under Review‘ premises).
