Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) are this morning reporting that the operator appears to be suffering from a major national outage of their TV platform – impacting their Live TV, On demand, and TV GO service. The issue started at about 10:30am and is currently ongoing.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today confirmed that their entire network of 1.2 million premises in Scotland now have access to gigabit broadband speeds (1130Mbps downloads and 52Mbps up), although this figure includes some areas that have previously already been upgraded to the DOCSIS 3.1 standard.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has been fined £150k by the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, after they were found to have provided “inaccurate and incomplete information” during an earlier investigation into the company’s billing issues (here), which separately resulted in the operator being fined £10.5m for overcharging customers.

Customers of mobile operator O2 UK (VMO2) appear to be suffering from a major problem or outage of the provider’s billing system, which for the past couple of days has been preventing them from being able to view their bills, make payments, add a data bolt-on or change their tariff.

The Leicester Crown Court has sent one man to prison, with another facing an arrest warrant, after the pair were found to have posed as fake broadband ISP engineers in order to steal telecoms equipment from several storage containers, which belonged to Virgin Media (VMO2).

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that another 6,100 homes across Tyne and Wear, including in Bruton Park, Newcastle and Longbenton, North Tyneside, have now gained access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Several alternative UK network (AltNets) builders, including Gigaclear and CityFibre, among others, are reportedly set to launch a legal challenge against Ofcom’s recent approval of Openreach’s “Equinox” offer (here), which introduces a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products.

The UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit rollout programme appears to have quietly confirmed that they now aim to deliver “full” 1Gbps broadband coverage to the final 20% of hardest to reach premises by 2030 (effectively universal coverage), at least where it is “value for money to do so.”

Some 500 of Virgin Media’s front-line UK staff, including broadband ISP engineers, have been given special training by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) so that they have the ability to administer lifesaving CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and can use a defibrillator.

Customers of UK ISP Virgin Media’s home broadband, phone and TV packages should now be able to access O2’s Priority app, which is normally exclusive to O2’s customers and is a way of rewarding them with various offers from high street brands, tickets and experiences – all at no extra cost.

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which saw TalkTalk come top of the naughty table for gripes about their fixed line home broadband and phone services. Meanwhile, Virgin Media took the most flak for Mobile and Pay TV, although overall complaints were down.

The UK was removed from this edition due to Brexit, so we’ve used Ofcom’s data to compare.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today introduced a range of “Black Friday” discounts across their various ultrafast broadband-only packages, which now start at just £25 per month for a download speed of 108Mbps (average). Some of their other bundles with phone and TV have also been reduced, but not as much.

Broadcaster ITV and broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) have today signed a new 5-year commercial partnership, which will deliver “deeper integration” of ITV’s programming, IPTV rights and features into the operator’s future IPTV based Pay TV products. As well as enabling customers to maintain access to ITV’s content.

Virgin Media and O2 UK (VMO2) have this morning taken the wraps off their first Electric Vehicles (EV), which will be used by their broadband ISP and mobile engineers. The company has just ordered 280 such vans (Vauxhall e-Vivaros) as a first step toward replacing their entire 4,300 strong fleet with EVs by 2030.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today switched-on gigabit broadband capability (1130Mbps downloads and 52Mbps up) for another 1.6 million UK homes, which means more than 90% of their entire network has now been upgraded to the DOCSIS 3.1 standard. The remaining 1.2 million should follow by the end of this year.

The CEO of Liberty Global, Michael Fries, has given an update on Virgin Media’s (VMO2) aspiration to launch a wholesale product for UK ISPs and their plan to upgrade existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) areas with XGS-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband. A trial of the latter is now taking place at 50,000 homes in 3 locations.
