Some 4,200 extra homes in the Woodburn area of Dalkeith have just become the latest in Scotland to benefit from the ongoing UK expansion of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband and TV network, which can offer top download speeds of up to 1130Mbps to local residents.

Customers of Virgin Mobile’s (Virgin Media) Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans have been informed that the service is “ending” and it will be gradually phased out between October 2021 and January 2022. During this period, customers will find that their SIM “will stop working … if you don’t take any action.” Talk about harsh.

UK ISP Swish Fibre, which is deploying a 10Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 250,000 premises in England (Home Counties), has launched an entertaining new advertising campaign that aims to highlight the differences between “speed-sapping” copper-mix “Fake Fibre” services and Full Fibre ones.

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which currently works alongside Virgin Media Business (VMO2) to supply ultrafast broadband to c.3,000 schools in London (over 1.2 million children), reports that one of VMO2’s fibre optic cables has been “seriously damaged” and is disrupting connectivity to various schools and businesses.

O2 (VMO2) has just become the first UK mobile operator to make live calls from its network using a new Neutral Host In-Building (NHIB) mobile specification, which makes it possible for multiple operators to serve indoor mobile (4G and 5G) coverage to businesses and public venues – somewhat of a complementary approach to OpenRAN.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) reported a sharp decrease in internet traffic during England’s Euro 2020 football final against Italy on Sunday, with customers downloading 28% less than at the same time last week. Likewise, mobile operator O2 reported “no significant rise” in data usage.

Price hikes are fairly common amongst all of the largest UK broadband ISPs, which tend to increase what they charge by an average of c.4-6% with every passing year, albeit often via a mix of very different and changeable approaches. But is it time for the industry to start considering a more predictable and standardised approach?

Customers of mobile operator O2 (VMO2) may like to know that they’ve upgraded the capacity of their 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network at almost 600 UK cell sites, which is part of their preparations for a “record staycation summer” (i.e. the sites are popular tourist destinations and seaside areas, such as Bognor Regis, Bath and Stirling).

The latest independent study of UK broadband coverage for H1 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 24.33% of premises (up from 19.2% in H2 2020), while 41.72% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 37.4%) and 66.9% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 64.3%).

A short but interesting debate was held yesterday in the Lords Chamber, which appeared to indicate that the UK Government are not, at present, pressing Ofcom to introduce mandatory low cost social tariffs for broadband across the industry. But like the regulator, they would like to see better promotion of those that exist.

The UK Government will today reveal that “up to” 234,000 hard-to-reach rural homes and businesses in Wales have been identified as “in scope” to potentially receive a gigabit-capable broadband upgrade, which should come as part of the new £5bn Project Gigabit programme.

Telecoms and media giant Virgin Media (VMO2) has, for the first time, harnessed the UK Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme in order to extend their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to connect rural locations in West Sussex (England) – with residents in Steyning, Upper Beeding and Bramber being invited to participate.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and Transport for London (TfL) have today confirmed that, following a recent trial on the Jubilee Line (here), they intend to proceed with their proposed plan to deploy a 4G based mobile (mobile broadband) network across the entire London Underground (platforms and tube trains) by late 2024.

Customers of UK ISP Virgin Media Business (VMO2) have informed ISPreview.co.uk that the upload speeds on their “Voom Fibre” packages for small businesses are being roughly doubled, which for example means that subscribers to their 350Mbps Voom Fibre 1 plan will see their uploads go from 7Mbps to 20Mbps.

The new Gigabit Take-Up Advisory Group (GigaTAG), which is supported by Which?, Ofcom, the FSB, CBI and other groups, has today set out their final report on what they think the UK Government needs to do in order to boost take-up of 1Gbps capable broadband services. Expect clearer labelling and more advertising campaigns.
