Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has tonight switched-on their new DOCSIS 3.1 network upgrade for 3 million extra people across both London and Northern Ireland, which means that a total of 6.8 million homes can now access their top Gig1 service (1104Mbps download and 52Mbps upload).

Nothing to worry about, move along please. Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media has “taken steps to ensure [port 7547] is no longer discoverable” online after they left it open on some routers. The good news is that this “posed no security risk” to customers, but it remains unclear why it occurred.

A new survey from Broadband Genie, which used a special tool to analyse and estimate the consumer stress levels of 305,568 tweets that were aimed at major UK broadband ISPs, has revealed which providers had the most stressed customers. Overall it’s bad news for Shell Energy, but good news for Hyperoptic.

Ofcom UK has set out new measures that will make switching between broadband ISPs on physically separate networks easier (e.g. Openreach to Cityfibre), but due to the complexities involved providers will be given until December 2022 implement it. Mobile operators will also be banned from selling “locked” handsets.

Some 6,900 homes in the North East Derbyshire town of Dronfield have just become the latest to benefit from the expansion of Virgin Media’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, although initially locals will only be able to access a top speed of 516Mbps (average) until the future DOCSIS 3.1 upgrade completes.

Broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media have just completed a small extension of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the Lancashire (England) towns of Blackburn and Darwen, which now covers an additional 1,200 homes.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media has today announced the launch of a new “Google Smart Home Trial“, which will give customers in certain parts of the UK the ability to add various Google-based smart home products (e.g. Nest) to their existing package. Prices for this will start from £10 extra per month.

Virgin Media appears to have continued to expand the availability of their latest HUB 4.0 (ARRIS TG3492LG-VMB) broadband router under their “Hub Swap” programme, which is giving existing customers on various different tiers the chance to “upgrade to our latest Hub 4 at no extra cost.”

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has warned the market regulator, Ofcom, against allowing BT (Openreach) to sign “deeply discounted and long-term” wholesale agreements for “full fibre” (FTTP) services with rivals ISPs, which they claim might make it harder for alternative networks to compete against the established giant.

A consumer action law firm, Your Lawyers, has today announced that they’ve launched a Group Action Claim against broadband ISP Virgin Media UK, which gives the provider “four weeks to admit liability” for a recent data breach that exposed the personal details belonging to 900,000 of their customers.

The new joint venture between ISP Virgin Media and mobile operator O2 (here) appears to have today resulted in an ambition to expand their gigabit-capable broadband network to reach an extra 1 million premises “within 12 months of the merger closing” (total of 16 million) and to then connect a “further 7 million homes.”

Customers awaiting a firmware update from Virgin Media UK to fix the throttling of broadband speeds on IPv4 internet traffic – specifically when data packets carry Protocol 41 (i.e. the IPv6 encapsulation / tunnel protocol) – may be unhappy to learn that there’s still no ETA, despite the issue being acknowledged 8 weeks ago.

Customers of Virgin Media’s mobile division, specifically new and existing Pay Monthly users who upgrade before 8th Nov 2020, will now also be entitled to a “one-off screen replacement” service in the first 12 months of their contract. But sadly this will only be offered to a very limited selection of Smartphones (when supplied via Virgin).
