Broadband ISP Quickline (Quickfire), which specialises in deploying “full fibre” FTTP and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband networks around Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, has set a target of covering 500,000 premises with their network after Northleaf Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in the company.

ISP Talk Straight has teamed up with ADTRAN to deploy a new 60GHz based gigabit fixed wireless broadband network across rural parts of the UK. The decision follows a recent Proof of Concept (PoC) trial, which found that the MetNet 60G solution could be a quick and cost-effective way of extending coverage beyond full fibre.

Three alternative network (altnet) providers – Briant Broadband, Spring Fibre and Stix Internet – have today revealed their intention to deploy gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks to homes and or businesses across different parts of the United Kingdom.

UK ISP BorderLink, which covers parts of Southern Scotland and Northern England with their ultrafast wireless broadband (100Mbps+) network, has secured a major £10.5m funding boost from the Gresham House Investment Fund (BSIF) to help them deploy 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) services.

Six street markets in the London borough of Westminster, including Church Street and Berwick Street among others, claim to have deployed a new “superfast” public WiFi network to help local traders, customers and visitors get online via a “gigabit-speed outdoor wireless” broadband connection.

A lot of UK people have tried tethering their Smartphone’s mobile broadband (4G, 5G) connection to a laptop by using the ‘Wi-Fi Hotspot‘ feature, but not everybody is aware that you can do the same thing by using a wired USB-C cable. As a bit of fun we decided to find out if tethering via a wired link is any better than a wireless one.

Broadband ISP Quickline (part of the Bigblu group) has started to rollout a new 100Mbps+ capable broadband network across 1,500 rural homes and businesses in North Lincolnshire (England), which follows last year’s award of a new £1.8m state aid supported contract by North Lincolnshire Council (NLC).

Fixed wireless and full fibre broadband ISP Voneus, which is now targeting future expansion into a potentially addressable market of 1.6 million UK homes (up from 900,000 previously), has announced that Macquarie Capital are increasing their ownership stake in the business and thus boosting their FTTP rollout.

Netgem TV has announced that their broadband-based IPTV platform, which is offered by a number of UK ISPs, is to be complemented by the introduction of their latest product – a whole home WiFi (mesh) service called “SuperStream” that is being aimed at internet providers in the UK and Ireland.

The Welsh Government (WG) has today published a new Digital Strategy for Wales, which among other things sets out how they will use the levers at their disposal to support the public sector, businesses and homes in Wales to receive the broadband and mobile connectivity they need. But at this stage it’s all still a bit vague.

The Pembrokeshire County Council (PCC) in Wales has issued an update on their gigabit-capable broadband rollout project for rural areas, which confirms the Phase 2 and Phase 3 deployment areas where Broadway Partners (ISP Broadway Broadband) and Voneus will be extending their network coverage.

Mobile operator Three UK today reports that they’ve “slashed” their 4G and 5G powered unlimited home broadband prices in order to help people who are stuck at home. Prices now start from as little as £17 per month for “superfast” 4G broadband, and £24 per month for “ultrafast” 5G – “with the average download speed of 100Mbps.”

The Government’s £2.52bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) has so far helped to extend 24-30Mbps+ capable UK ISP networks to 5,327,128 extra premises since 2012 (up by 33.9K in H2 2020 vs 62.7K in H1 2020) – about 440,000 (our estimate) of these are FTTP – and take-up data to December 2020 shows strong demand.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has today issued a progress update on their new Phase 2 contracts with ISPs Airband, Wessex Internet and Truespeed, which are worth a combined £80m (including £23.6m of public investment) and aim to improve broadband coverage to 56,396 premises (mostly rural areas).
