Rural fixed wireless broadband ISP Voneus, which currently only covers around 4,500 UK premises with their 30-50Mbps capable network, has managed to secure a large investment from Macquarie Capital that could help their network to target 900,000 homes. Going forward they also intend to rollout full fibre (FTTP) services.

Nominet has published the results of new poll, which queried 2,080 UK adults about their home internet connectivity (i.e. attitudes to broadband ISP, WiFi and mobile reliability). Overall 60% of respondents would opt for reliability over speed and 79% said they had experienced broadband reliability problems in the last year.

As expected Ofcom has today unveiled a new sharing framework that will be applied via four of the United Kingdom’s radio spectrum frequency bands (airwaves), which should make it possible for smaller mobile and fixed wireless broadband ISP networks to be created in order to deliver local coverage or industrial use.

A new report has revealed that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.06% (+21.2 million) during Q1 2019 to total 1.047 billion, while older pure copper line ISP connections continued to decline in the face of a rising onslaught from faster fibre optic based connections.

A few years ago Sky Broadband became the first ISP to stop accepting orders from UK customers on lines – often rural ones – where speeds were stuck below 2Mbps (here). Sadly more providers appear to have joined this club of shunning those on slower lines, which for some may exasperate the feeling of digital exclusion.

After several trials Transport for London (TfL) has today announced that they will make 4G mobile (mobile broadband) services available across the whole of their London Underground (tube trains) network by the “mid-2020s“, starting with the eastern half of the Jubilee line from March 2020 (tunnels and stations).

Vodafone has announced that their new 5G network, which promises average mobile broadband speeds of 150-200Mbps and peaks up to 1Gbps, has now started rolling out into Birkenhead, Bolton, Gatwick, Lancaster, Newbury, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent and Wolverhampton after initially only going live in a few major cities.

UK ISP BitStreme (BitBahn.io) has today announced that they’ve launched their new 1Gbps capable hybrid fibre optic and Microwave wireless broadband network to cover three locations around Bedfordshire, which will very soon be followed by additional areas in Essex and Kent.

Wireless UK ISP Quickline has announced that their part of the £2.1m Government funded 5G Rural Integrated Testbed (5GRIT) pilot is due to start testing its new network later this month, which will initially aim to bring superfast broadband to holidaymakers across caravan parks in Ingoldmells (Lincolnshire), including Butlins.

The Government’s Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, Margot James MP, has wrongfully claimed that its Building Digital UK programme has now helped to push fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network coverage to 97% of UK premises (the expectation is that this could reach around 98% by the end of 2020).

The Building Digital UK scheme, which since 2013 has helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 5,123,530 extra premises (up by +46.9K since Q4 2018), has just published its latest take-up data to the end of March 2019. Coverage continues to grow, albeit slowly as contracts near their end.

ISP Vodafone has today gone live in 7 UK cities with their new 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband network. At the same time they’ve moved to challenge Three UK by introducing a new range of SIM-only and handset plans with “unlimited data” (also on 4G services). A new home broadband (FTTC) and mobile bundle is coming too.

Homes connecting to a supposedly 1Gbps wireless broadband trial in the tiny rural Monmouthshire (Wales) village of Llanddewi Rhydderch, which is supported by the UK Government, have yet to experience “anything near” to those speeds. A recent council meeting also suggests that the service becomes “patchy when the weather is poor.”

A new trial has enabled cable operator Virgin Media UK to deploy a 1Gbps (150Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / RFoG) broadband network into the Berkshire village of Greenham near Newbury, which was made possible by feeding the network via a 10Gbps high-capacity millimetre wave (mmW) radio link.

A new study by TravelSim has analysed the number of free wifi hotspots, cost per MegaByte of data, average broadband speeds (mobile / wireless) and the number of hotels and airports with free wifi in 19 of the world’s most visited destinations to find the best and worst cities to stay connected whilst travelling.

Fixed Wireless ISP 6G Internet (6GI), which despite the misleading name doesn’t actually use the 6G mobile standard (it doesn’t exist.. yet), has initially committed to rollout a 1Gbps (rising to 6Gbps by 2025) capable broadband network across 38,000 homes in Blackburn (Lancashire) over the next 2 years.
