Panasonic (Panasonic Avionics Corporation) has today signed a new deal with UK satellite operator Inmarsat, which will see the company deploying the “high-speed broadband” GX Aviation (Global Xpress) platform to deliver faster in-flight WiFi connectivity to the airlines (passengers) they serve.

The state aid supported Fastershire project has announced that they’ve secured a further £5m of funding from the Government’s Rural Broadband Infrastructure Scheme (RBIS), which will be used to extend a new hybrid fixed wireless and fibre optic ultrafast broadband network to reach remote premises in 10 additional areas.

A new trial has begun that could eventually see thousands of social housing properties in multiple tower blocks across the city of Leeds (Yorkshire) being given “free” access to a bog standard 5Mbps broadband connection (after a small one-off fee is paid), which uses WiFi wireless technology.

The remote rural Orkney islands, specifically the tiny isles of Papay and North Ronaldsay, could be about to see an improvement to their dire local broadband ISP speeds after Openreach (BT) reportedly agreed to at least “investigate the practicalities” of delivering faster connectivity to the area via a new wireless link.

A new report on local economic growth will next week warn Shropshire County Council in England of the “disappointing” news that their goal of providing all homes and businesses in the region with access to “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) by 2020 is “no longer likely [to] be achieved,” but it should get there eventually.

Ofcom has revealed that only BT (Openreach), KCOM, Hyperoptic, Quickline and Broadway Partners have expressed a formal interest in becoming suppliers for the new Universal Service Obligation (USO), which from 2020 will make it possible for anybody in a slow speed area to request a broadband speed of at least 10Mbps.

A little known Wirral-based business ISP called Integrated Digital Services (IDS) claims to have been “awarded public funding” from the UK Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme in order to help them deploy a 30Mbps+ capable wireless network to serve “digitally disadvantaged” rural areas in England and Wales.

BT has this month extended the roll-out of their new InLinkUK smart kiosks to Sheffield, Newcastle and Gateshead. The kiosks claim to offer “ultrafast” 1Gbps capable free public WiFi, free UK phone calls, USB device charging and a range of other digital services to help people in the vicinity.

Israel-based chipset maker Sckipio has teamed up with Siklu to deploy a unique twist on hybrid fibre G.fast broadband technology, which is now able to get capacity from a millimeter Wave (mmWave) wireless link instead of a fibre optic cable. This is being used to deliver speeds of up to 800Mbps (aggregate) to flats.

A new survey of 9,300 Airline passengers from 32 countries, which was conducted by Populus for Satellite operator Inmarsat, has found that 55% now view inflight WiFi connectivity as “crucial“. Likewise 67% would consider rebooking to a different airline if it offered good wireless broadband.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP Airband has today secured an additional investment of £16 million through the National Digital Infrastructure Fund (NDIF), which will be used to help expand their rural superfast and ultrafast broadband network to pass an additional 50,000 premises in England and Wales by 2021.
