Alternative rural UK broadband network Voneus has been criticised after a network fault resulted in two premises in villages near Brecon (Wales) losing connectivity, which by itself wouldn’t be a huge development. But in this case, the provider later chose to “decommission” the service rather than repair it, leaving those affected offline.

A new survey of 90 global internet providers, which was conducted by Heavy Reading (Omdia), in collaboration with eero (Amazon) and Qualcomm Technologies, claims that more than 50% of ISPs have already deployed or expect to deploy WiFi 7 based service plans within 12 months. Part of this is to support the roll-out of multi-gigabit speed packages, said to be growing at 20.5% a year (CAGR).

Connectivity provider Neos Networks, which operates one of the biggest 34,000km long and 400Gbps capable business fibre optic networks in the UK – spanning 550 exchanges, 90+ data centres and 600+ Points of Presence (PoPs), has completed the first fibre installation under Project Reach to help improve 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) coverage along major rail lines.

TechUK, which represents many of the UK’s key technology firms, has today drawn on 23 indicators from across the economy, connectivity, and skills to paint a regional and national picture of the tech ecosystem via their 2025 Local Digital Index. But the report also calls on the government to “fast-track” completion of its broadband and mobile projects to tackle slow spots, ideally alongside relief from business rates.

The Great Western Railway (GWR), which operates most train services across the Great Western Main Line (GWML) – the rail line in England that runs between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads, has joined with Peninsula Transport, Network Rail and Motion Applied to pilot faster on-board broadband (WiFi) using “technology from the world of Formula 1“.

Alternative UK broadband network Voneus has today officially confirmed what we touched on last month (here), which reveals that they’ve strengthened their position for “long-term growth” with a business reorganisation and have secured funding through to 2030 (i.e. renegotiation of an existing £70m debt facility). But more job cuts are set to follow.

The Broadband Forum has published a new technical report that outlines how multiple tenants and apartments (MDU – Multi-Dwelling Units) could receive gigabit broadband connectivity through a single 5G based Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network connection, not least by reusing some of the building’s existing infrastructure.

ISP BT has published the biannual (October 2025) progress update on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat unpopular 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,553 premises (up from 8,411 in April 2025), with 186 further builds in-progress (down from 349).

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today decided to proceed with all the proposals they outlined in January 2025 to exempt lots of additional equipment from needing a wireless telegraphy licence, such as 5G handsets and dongles on aircraft or ships and 5.8GHz (5725-5850 MHz) Fixed Wireless Access kit – used by many wireless broadband ISPs.

As expected, Ofcom has today confirmed that they will make part of the 1900MHz radio spectrum band (1900-1920MHz), which had previously gone unused by mobile operators, available for use by both the UK’s rail network (5G / data services) and to extend coverage for the 4G Emergency Services Network (ESN).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has this morning revealed the final (assignment stage) results of last week’s auction of the 26GHz and 40GHz millimetre wave (mmW) spectrum bands for use by 5G mobile broadband operators, which sets out precisely which frequencies within each band will be allocated to EE, O2 and VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK).

A new Government consultation has revealed that the Data Communications Company (DCC), which is in the process of working to upgrade existing Smart Meters in UK homes with a new 4G Communication Hub (here and here), will in 2026 also launch a Virtual WAN service. This will mean that home broadband can be used to connect premises not covered by their normal wireless network.

The Senior MD at Macquarie, Oliver Bradley, has revealed that that one of the alternative broadband networks they support, Voneus, recently completed a renegotiation on their existing £70m debt facility over the summer. The move saw existing investors inject an unspecified amount of fresh funding to keep the operator going.

The Derbyshire County Council (DCC) in England has agreed to invest £900,000 to support the launch of two grant programmes, which will aim to improve broadband connectivity in at least some of the communities – predominantly rural ones – that are currently still expected to miss out on access to faster connections.

Network operator Openreach (BT), which has recently taken some flak for its broadband discounts (here), have launched another somewhat curious new promotion for ISPs that cuts the rental charge on all New to Network (NTN) full fibre (FTTP) lines to £0 for the first 12 months when the customer originates from a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service.
