Ethernet is the most widely-used form of local area network (LAN) technology, which is based off the IEEE 802.3 standard. It was originally developed by Xerox from an earlier specification called ALOHAnet (Palo Alto Research Center Aloha network) and then developed further by Xerox, DEC, and Intel. If you have a home network of several computers then Ethernet is likely to be at its foundation.
