Gigabit Passive Optical Networks are a form of fibre optic communication that can be used in both traditional Ethernet networks and more modern ultrafast broadband connections. A lot of modern Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks are based off this design and all use laser light and optical cable for their transmissions instead of electrical signals being sent down metal cables.
