This is a rival fourth generation (4G) mobile phone technology to WiMAX. LTE is based off improvements to existing 3G (UTMS / HSPA) technology and could theoretically offer download speeds of up to 326.4Mbps and upstream of 86.4Mbps for every 20MHz of spectrum.
Future enhancements to the standard could even see peak speeds of 1Gbps (Gigabit), though individual consumers would experience something considerably slower. LTE is still in development and roughly two years behind Mobile WiMAX technology.
