The CEO of Three (3), Kevin Russell, has warned that despite an obvious surge in uptake of '
Mobile Broadband' (3G) services, they won't replace fixed-line equivalents. Russell also noted some fears over dwindling network capacity as the technology takes off, although so far this has not threatened the UK:
‘There are clear markets where mobile broadband works well. There are instances where it works better than fixed-line broadband. I don’t think it will replace fixed line. Fixed line will be able to price itself very competitively.’
Certainly '
Mobile Broadband' isn't going to overtake land-line equivalents anytime soon, but perhaps Russell underestimates the appeal of their technology. It's already possible to closely match such services to rivals in the land-line market and with a bit of tweaking (extra services, more flexibility, lower costs and higher data allowances) everything could change.
