i3 Group's (formerly H2O Networks) Fibrecity project has officially connected the first 50 homes in the UK south coast town of Bournemouth to its next generation up to 100Mbps fibre optic ( FTTH ) broadband network. The group is now known to be targeting a nationwide rollout figure of no less than 2,000 homes per week and more once additional fibre cities come on tap (e.g. Dundee).

Bournemouth is the first of 15 town and city-wide fibre networks being built across the UK by Fibrecity over the next 10 years. This true FTTH infrastructure sees two fibres installed to each property that connects to the Fibrecity network using underground sewers, which is cheaper than digging up the road to lay new cable.

One fibre enables homeowners to benefit from paid for services such as IPTV, telephony and super fast 100Mbps broadband connectivity. A separate 40Mbps fibre is dedicated to the council and will be used to deliver local services such as community TV and health services:

Elfed Thomas, CEO and founder of i3 Group, said: “Fibrecity is the only network that is building a national infrastructure to all homes, both new build and existing properties, that brings fibre into their living room. It does not at any point rely on the existing antiquated copper network like BT’s already outdated fibre to the cabinet network.

The FTTH and point-to-point fibre optic networks being built by Fibrecity and H2O Networks means that homes and businesses will benefit from super fast connectivity which far exceeds the Government’s vision for Digital Britain of a comparatively super slow 2Mbps for each household.

i3 hopes to use Bournemouth's initial 50 homes as a showcase for the capabilities of its Fibrecity infrastructure. Early adopters will benefit from the projects free connection and limited free service period, which will be withdrawn once engineers leave the area. The same promotion will also apply to initial adopters in i3's second fibre city of Dundee this summer.

Since its launch last year, the Fibrecity initiative has progressed well and its first two Fibrecities are on track to be completed by the end of 2010. The firm is also in final negotiations with a number of content providers and companies to offer next generation services including IPTV, which aims to deliver a complete range of channels including interactive gaming.

However it hasn't all been plain sailing, with the i3 Group recently calling on the government to review the issue of fibre taxation. It warned the government that such a tax was in danger of creating a digital divide by dis-incentivising investment in superfast connectivity (original news).

I hope they actually provide a great service. I would so love to tell virgin and all the adsl providers to stick it. Their networks are over crowded not to mention full of traffic management restrictions which defies the point in broadband.

Come to LONDON asap so i can cancel my lame virgin line please. People dont mind paying if they get what is advertised.

I would expect congestion and traffic management restrictions to ultimately become just as common place on the new generation of fibre optic services as they are on existing ADSL and cable platforms. Bandwidth still costs money.

Initially though they'll want to promote the service to as many new customers as possible so I wouldn't be surprised to see an early ADSL style all you can eat approach to broadband selling.

"The fibre network is being laid at the expense of Fibrecity Bournemouth Ltd. It owns the network, but the services will be delivered by third party service providers. Who the providers are and the costs of the services are not yet available. "

still vapourware then ?

I'm pretty sure C4L are one of their ISPs, they've been talking about 100Mbps fibre services in the area.

I would be happy if anyone could offer me half a meg connection where I live, the so called last mile adsl is still to far from the exchange for me (less then 250kb), If I lived in middle of the sticks I would understand, but I'm in a build up area with hundreds of other households in the same position as me, ironically less then 1 mile away from me there are some of the major multi-nationals who are actively working with wimax technologies...

There's a C4L.co.uk that offer hosting and colo services.

Their website says they plan to have hosting and colo in (wait for it) >>Bournemouth<<. In Q4 2009.

They're not a typical retail ISP but then FTTH isn't typical retail ISP service (yet).

If it's not them, who is it?

And if it is them, what happens to customer connections between today and Q4?
