ISP Tiscali UK has reported its latest set of results to the end of 2008 (Q4), which shows yet another decline in its broadband (ADSL) subscriber base to 1,768,000 from 1,774,000 in Q3 2008. However this reduction of -6,000 customers is significantly slower than the -64,000 drop seen between Q2 and Q3 of the same year.

Tiscali currently has 827,000 of its broadband customers on their cheaper unbundled (LLU) platform, which is curiously a lot lower than the 889,000 figure touted in its previous 30th September 2008 results (original news). The ISP now plans to focus more on its double-play offers in LLU areas, improving customer service and further "cost efficiencies" from the Pipex takeover.

There's also talk about "rationalising" its product portfolio, including Internet TV (IPTV) services, though we're not quite sure what that will mean.

Pipex / Tiscali are just awful. The business model appears to be to make money from telephone support, so there's no incentive to provide a decent and reliable service. Heaven help you if you are a customer who needs to deal with them as you will be given the runaround, passed bewteen departments and still get nowhere. By far the worst customer service I have exerienced. No wonder people are leaving - and given the many stories on the web about the difficulties leaving you have to believe that the figure above under-reports the true picture.

I left well over 2 years ago when it's traffic shaping policy came in. Prior to that the service was poor, prone to disconnection and customer support was non-existant.

They also tried to charge me a small fortune after I sent a notice of cancellation 18 months before, hearing absolutely nothing from them during that period despite being charged every month.

After much legal wrangling they backed down.

I'm surpised to hear they still exist. A friend of mine was part of a project managment team that went into Pipex to try and sort them out, but even they thought they were a lost cause.

I'm very happy with my beUnlimited now, after an equally disturbing time with the liars at Branson media.

When I moved out of my flat and into my partner's flat (back in 2005) Pipex stole £80 off me when I cancelled my account with them. I'm not a stupid person, I followed the proper cancellation procedure and had been with them long enough for my cancellation to not be in breach of my contract. I followed the complaints procedure and then fought hammer and tongs to get my money back, but to no avail.

Today I have returned home to find a letter from Commercial Credit Services to tell my partner that he owes Tiscali about £80 and if he doesn't pay immediately then he will be taken to court for £150. He was with Pipex when I moved into the flat back in 2005 (much to my disapproval after my altercation with them), and when we moved into our house in April he called them, cancelled (we'd already gone with Tiscali at the house back in December) and we have a cancellation code. Whether the cancellation code will carry much weight when he phones Tiscali tomorrow remains to be seen.

I just wanted to vent because I'm pretty sure we're going to lose £80 to Tiscali and for me it's not the first time. And we're still locked into a Tiscali contract at home, which is so depressing. I'm pretty damn angry and I hope lots of people read this and they lose business from it.
