UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has written an interesting BLOG POST about the problems they're having with BT and upgrading their platforms to the operators latest 21st Century Network (21CN / ADSL+) network. It makes for a good read and helps to show the difficulties that ISPs often have to deal with behind the scenes.

The main reasons for upgrading are:-
  • Improved service to customers in terms of line speeds and latency with ADSL2+

  • Improved service to customers still on 20CN by reducing load

  • Reduced costs to us (for which we have pre-emptively passed on price reductions)
Unfortunately things are not entirely going to plan (a recurring theme, I know).
  • Some of the cost reductions we expected are not happening as we expected, which means 20CN lines will continue to cost us a lot more than 21CN lines. Our price reductions have not allowed for this.

  • Until we get a new service (WBMC IPStream connect) from BT (which could be 6 months off) we don't make any savings moving lines to 21CN and in fact increase costs. We expected the new service to have been available long before now.

  • And the last straw is that BT continue to make serious errors in the regrade process causing customers to be off line for days in some cases.
The last point is the real clincher. We can't really expect customers to tollerate all of their lines on an exchange going off and staying off for days. We have had something like six whole exchanges that have not worked in the last week alone. One is still off from the middle of last week and customers are understandable unhappy.

I can assure you we are doing everything possible to have these faults rectified as soon as possible and escalating at all levels in BT.

It should be noted that WBMC refers to the Managed version of BT's up to 24Mbps ADSL2+ related Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) products. The managed service has suffered some delays, thus slowing the ability of other BT based UK ISPs to launch their own 24Mbps products.

Providers can of course adopt the vanilla WBC, although it lacks some of the managed products benefits, such as being able to work with older IPStream Central Pipes (i.e. the old broadband platform). WBMC could make it easier to migrate existing customers over to the faster products.

# We are looking to cancel pending regrades. BT have agreed to cancel some so far, but they actually charge us £15 per cancellation (cancelling a free service using an automated process to cancel it). If they agree to waive these charges we will cancel all pending regrades and advise customers.
# Customers will still be able to order one-off regrades (costs £11+VAT).
# We'll look in to working with multi-line customers to test regrade one of their lines to confirm exchanges are ready. In the mean time some other ISPs can discover the joys of being the first 21CN users on an exchange.
# When we think BT are ready again, we'll look to start bulk regrades again - though this may also wait until we have more definite dates for IPStream Connect.
# We may have to consider a small increase in prices on 20CN high usage lines but hope we can avoid that.
# We are working with BT on trials for IPStream connect. We hope we can ensure the service works as expected and assist BT in the process so that when we can switch over it should work smoothly. Thank you to the volunteers for this.
# We are ploughing ahead with R&D and technological improvements, and hope to launch new services such as prority traffic tagging on 21CN lines soon.

I wasn't logged in when I posted this and then Firefox needed closing when I upgraded from colonial to proper English.

I lost my thought on the subject too now, neither.

Something about suing the pants off the conglomerate that pants. Is Margaret Thatcher still alive enough to realise the harm she did us all for generations to come?

I have no confidence in Bt,
their "21cn network" is put together like tape and string fiber cables here(profit areas) copper wires there(all else).
In my opinion it will be little better than the existing telecomunication networks.
Costing all that money to be in the same position in ten years time or less, behind the times too little too late.

I received my first home loans when I was not very old and that supported my family very much. Nevertheless, I require the car loan again.
